What is the advantage of the Baader Hyperion Aspheric 36mm's aspheric design?
Aspheric correction resolves numerous imaging errors at once, giving sharpness over the entire field with reduced distortion, and the construction allows fewer glass surfaces (6 elements in 4 groups), which with the Phantom Group coating gives a brighter, more contrast-rich image.
Why does the Hyperion Aspheric 36mm have a 72° apparent field instead of 80° or more?
A 72° field is only slightly larger than the largest viewing angle of the human eye (68°), so the whole field can be surveyed at once, while in fields of 80° and more the field cannot be taken in at once and the available light is spread over too large an area.
How do I use the Hyperion Aspheric 36mm in both 1.25" and 2" focusers?
The eyepiece comes with both 1.25" and 2" barrels. You simply attach the barrel that matches your focuser or diagonal. Note that the performance differs between the two modes:
-
2" Barrel: Provides the full 72° apparent field of view with a 45mm field stop.
-
1.25" Barrel: Provides a 50° apparent field of view with a 30mm field stop.
Can I attach a camera directly to the Baader Hyperion Aspheric 36mm?
Yes. The eyepiece is designed for afocal imaging and classical eyepiece projection. It has M43 and SP54 system threads on the eye side. DSLR camera bodies can be attached directly behind the eyepiece through these threads with Baader adapter rings.
What is the benefit of the 2" SC thread on the Hyperion Aspheric 36mm?
The integrated 2" SC thread allows you to screw the eyepiece body directly onto the rear cell of a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, bypassing the star diagonal. This very short attachment gives a larger true field of view than a wide-angle eyepiece with a 2" plug-in sleeve.
Is the Hyperion Aspheric 36mm a good eyepiece for binoviewing?
The Aspheric eyepieces can also be used on astro-binoculars, and in any telescopic binocular where the minimum eye distance is not less than 56mm. The outer diameter is 59.5mm.
What magnification does the 36mm give?
Magnification is the telescope's focal length divided by 36. On a telescope of 1000mm focal length it gives about 28x. Exit pupil is the eyepiece focal length divided by the telescope's focal ratio; at f/10 it is 3.6mm.
What comes in the box?
Our listing ships the Hyperion Aspheric 36mm eyepiece. The Aspheric eyepieces are each delivered with 1.25" and 2" plug-in sleeves, and the specification includes a folding eyecup on the M43 thread and dust caps of 31.8mm, 45mm and 46.5mm.
What are Baader Phantom Group coatings?
Baader's 7-layer Phantom Group coatings are engineered to be most effective where the dark-adapted eye is most sensitive (around 520nm) and to have extremely low residual reflection across the entire visible spectrum. A strong green reflex shows light between 500 and 550 nm being reflected and lost; Phantom Group coatings appear almost colourless.
Will I need to refocus when switching to the Hyperion Aspheric 36mm?
The Baader Hyperion Aspheric 36mm is parfocal, as is the 31mm Aspheric. The field stop displacement to the reference plane is +/- 0mm with the 2" sleeve.
