  • SVBONY SC571CC APS-C Color Cooled Astronomy Camera

The SVBONY SC571CC is built around the SONY IMX571 sensor, combining a 26MP resolution with a wide-field APS-C format. Its back-illuminated 3.76µm pixels achieve a peak quantum efficiency over 80%, and it records through a 16-bit ADC. To ensure clean long exposures, its dual-stage TEC cooling is rated at approximately 35°C below ambient. Read noise drops as low as 1.14e- in high-gain mode, and the onboard 512MB DDR3 buffer supports up to 13.3 FPS at full resolution.

    The 26MP SONY IMX571: A 28.3mm Diagonal APS-C Sensor

At the core of the SC571CC is the SONY IMX571, a color CMOS sensor with an APS-C format (23.5×15.7mm) that gives a wide field for large nebulae and galaxy groups. Its 28.3mm diagonal requires a well-corrected optical system to ensure sharp stars across the frame, a common consideration for any large-format astronomy camera.

The sensor's 6244×4168 resolution and 3.76µm pixels sample finely at the focal lengths of mid-size refractors and corrected reflectors.

Low-Noise Architecture: >80% QE and 1.14e- Read Noise

The SC571CC leverages the IMX571's back-illuminated architecture to achieve a peak Quantum Efficiency (QE) of over 80%. At its peak, the sensor turns most incoming photons into signal.

High Conversion Gain (HCG) mode lowers read noise while keeping full well capacity; read noise drops to as low as 1.14e-. The full read noise range spans from 2.6e- in low-gain mode down to 1.14e- at high gain settings.

Dual-Stage Cooling: A 35°C Delta T and Zero Amp Glow

Thermal noise from dark current is a primary challenge in long-exposure astrophotography. The SC571CC has a dual-stage thermoelectric cooler (TEC) rated at approximately 35°C below ambient. A set temperature lets you reuse dark frames across sessions.

There is also zero amp glow, meaning no amplifier glow in the corners of long or high-gain exposures.

Data Path: 16-bit ADC, 512MB Buffer, and 13.3 FPS

All image data is processed through a true 16-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC), capturing 65,536 distinct brightness levels. The extra bit depth helps with smooth tonal transitions.

To manage this high-bit-depth data stream without issue, a 512MB DDR3 buffer is integrated directly onto the camera. It holds frames before they go out over the USB Type-C (USB 3.0) port, which helps at the full-resolution maximum of 13.3 FPS. The cooler runs from the DC 12V input.

Optical Integration: A Fixed 17.5mm Back Focus

The SC571CC has an M42×0.75 thread for direct connection to filter wheels, off-axis guiders, and field flatteners. The camera body has a fixed back focal distance of 17.5mm.

To achieve the standard 55mm back focus required by many correctors, the package includes a set of extension tubes and adapters:

    • M42M-M48F-16.5mm Extension Tube: Adapts the camera's M42 threads to wider M48 threads.
    • M42M-M42F-21mm Extension Tube: Adds length while maintaining the M42 thread standard.
    • M48M to M42F-0mm Adapter Ring: Provides additional thread conversion flexibility.

Universal Control: Drivers for Windows, Mac, Linux & Raspberry Pi

It supports Windows, Mac, Linux and Raspberry Pi.

SVBONY supplies ASCOM, DirectShow and native drivers plus its own control software, and names N.I.N.A., SharpCap, StellaVita, APT and SGP.

  • What is the main advantage of the SC571CC's IMX571 sensor for astrophotography?

The SONY IMX571 is a back-illuminated APS-C sensor. The SVBONY SC571CC has a peak Quantum Efficiency over 80%, 26MP resolution and read noise as low as 1.14e-, a combination suited to faint galaxies and nebulae.

How does the 16-bit ADC on the SC571CC improve my deep-sky images?

A 16-bit ADC records 65,536 brightness levels, against 16,384 for 14-bit, which gives smoother brightness transitions.

How does the SVBONY SC571CC perform on H-alpha targets like the North American Nebula (NGC 7000)?

As a color camera, the SC571CC records H-alpha (656nm) on its red pixels only. With a dual-band or H-alpha filter and its cooled sensor, it can image emission nebulae from light-polluted locations.

I use an 8" f/10 SCT. Is the SVBONY SC571CC's APS-C sensor a good match?

Yes, but a focal reducer is highly recommended. At the native f/10 focal length (around 2000mm), the 3.76µm pixels would be severely oversampled. A 0.63x or 0.7x reducer brings it to about f/6.3 or f/7, for better sampling and a wider field; check the reducer's corrected field against the 28.3mm diagonal.

Do I need new dark frames every session with the SC571CC's TEC cooling?

Not necessarily. The dual-stage TEC cooling can hold a precise sensor temperature (e.g., -10°C) regardless of a few degrees change in ambient temperature. This allows you to build a library of dark frames at your preferred temperature and gain setting, then reuse them for multiple imaging sessions.

Why does the SVBONY SC571CC need a separate 12V power supply?

The dual-stage TEC cooler needs more power than a USB port supplies, so the camera comes with a DC 12V 3.3A power adapter.

What is the purpose of the 512MB DDR3 buffer on the SC571CC?

The 512MB DDR3 buffer acts as a temporary high-speed memory cache for image data before it's transferred to your computer. This helps prevent dropped frames when taking many short exposures or using a slower computer.

How do I achieve the standard 55mm back focus with the SVBONY SC571CC?

The camera body has a back focus of 17.5mm. The two included extension tubes add 21mm and 16.5mm: 17.5 + 21 + 16.5 = 55mm, ending in an M48 female thread.

Is the SC571CC suitable for planetary imaging of Jupiter or Saturn?

While designed for deep-sky, the SC571CC can be used for planetary imaging. Its large sensor fits a planet and its moons in one frame. For high-magnification work, you would use a small Region of Interest (ROI) to achieve much higher frame rates than the full-resolution 13.3 FPS. However, cameras with smaller pixels are often preferred for dedicated high-resolution planetary imaging.

What's the difference between the SC571CC's High and Low Conversion Gain modes?

Low gain gives the largest full well (51ke-), so bright stars take longer to saturate. High Conversion Gain (HCG) mode prioritizes low read noise (down to 1.14e-), which suits faint nebulae and galaxies.
