Check vignettingThe SVBONY SV605MC Mono Cooled Camera pairs a 9MP Sony IMX533 sensor with two-stage TEC cooling capable of reaching 35-40°C below ambient temperature for clean, high-resolution deep-sky imaging. Its square 3008x3008 format and 3.76µm pixels are suited to a wide range of telescopes, with a peak Quantum Efficiency of 91%. With read noise as low as 1.0e- and a full well capacity of 50Ke-, the SV605MC records through a 14-bit ADC.
At the core of the SV605MC is Sony's back-illuminated IMX533 monochrome sensor, featuring a 3008x3008 pixel array. It uses Starvis back-illuminated pixel technology. The square format means the frame fits a target the same way whichever way the camera sits in the focuser.
SVBONY offers the SV605MC with 1.25-inch and 2-inch filter wheels and the SV226 filter drawer. With 1.25-inch filters, keep them close to the sensor to avoid vignetting on the 15.968mm diagonal.
Peak Quantum Efficiency (QE) is 91%, so the sensor turns about nine in ten photons at its peak wavelength into signal. Read noise runs from 3.3e- down to 1.0e- as gain rises.
To preserve signal integrity, the camera utilizes a 14-bit ADC to capture over 16,000 levels of grayscale, providing the bit depth needed for smooth gradients in post-processing. A full well capacity of 50,000 electrons gives room before bright stars saturate. HCG mode turns on automatically at gain 100, with read noise as low as 1.0e- and dynamic range close to 14 bit.
The SV605MC has a two-stage thermoelectric cooler (TEC) that can be set to 35-40°C below ambient (tested at 30°C ambient). Cooling lowers dark current, so long exposures carry less thermal noise. The camera also has a drying chamber.
In addition to active cooling, an amplifier control circuit suppresses amp glow, the faint glow that can appear in a corner of long exposures.
The SV605MC has a 256MB DDR3 buffer, which holds image data before it goes to your computer over USB 3.0. This helps at high frame rates or when the computer is busy.
While designed for deep-sky imaging, the camera's ability to capture full 9MP frames at 20 FPS also suits the Moon and planets, and the Sun with a proper solar filter. This frame rate allows you to use "lucky imaging" techniques to freeze moments of good seeing, capturing sharp details on the Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn.
There are two back focus values, 6.5mm and 17.5mm, with no label for which configuration each is. Plan spacing to your flattener or reducer from these.
Most adapters are included: a T2 adapter, an M42-M48 ring, a T2-1.25 inch adapter, M42 and M48 extension rings and a 1.25-inch T-adapter, for 1.25-inch and 2-inch focusers and filter wheels.
As a monochrome camera, the SV605MC records every pixel without the color filter array of a one-shot-color camera. You build color images by shooting through separate Luminance, Red, Green and Blue (LRGB) filters.
Mono sensors also suit narrowband imaging. By using specialized filters like Hydrogen-alpha (Ha), Oxygen-III (OIII), and Sulphur-II (SII), you can isolate specific emission lines from nebulae. This technique cuts through light pollution and moonlight, allowing you to capture intricate details in emission nebulae like the Heart Nebula (IC 1805) even from suburban skies.
The SV605MC's imaging sensor and electronics are powered directly via the USB 3.0 connection to your computer. The cooler needs a separate 12V 5A DC supply (5.5 x 2.1mm, center positive).
It supports Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Chrome OS and Raspberry Pi OS, with drivers from svbony.com, and the manual gives setup steps for SharpCap.
The 3008x3008 square format of the SVBONY SV605MC simplifies composition. The frame has the same width and height, so camera rotation matters less when framing.
The 256MB DDR3 buffer acts as temporary storage for image data before it's sent to the computer via USB 3.0. This helps at the maximum 20 FPS or when the host computer is busy.
Yes. As a mono camera with 91% peak QE and read noise down to 1.0e-, the SV605MC works with hydrogen-alpha, oxygen-III and sulfur-II filters, which also help under light-polluted skies.
Two figures exist, 6.5mm and 17.5mm, with no note of which setup each applies to. Measure your train with the adapters you use before setting spacing to a flattener or reducer.
Yes. It runs at 20 FPS at full resolution, and the planets are among its intended targets. On an 8" f/10 SCT, its 3.76µm pixels provide good image sampling for resolving details on Jupiter and Saturn. The main trade-off is its rolling shutter, which can introduce minor artifacts on fast-rotating planets if exposure times are not kept very short.
Amp glow is a faint illumination, often seen in the corners of an image, caused by heat from the sensor's electronics during long exposures. The SV605MC uses an amplifier control circuit to suppress it.
The camera itself is powered by the USB 3.0 cable. However, to use the TEC cooling system, you must connect a separate 12V 5A DC power supply with a 5.5 x 2.1mm center-positive plug. The cooling will not function without this external power.
To create a color image, you capture a series of exposures through different color filters and then combine them in software. The standard process is LRGB imaging:
Yes. It supports Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Chrome OS and Raspberry Pi OS. This allows the SV605MC to be used with a wide range of computers and astrophotography software platforms, not just Windows-based systems.
HCG (High Conversion Gain) mode is a feature of the sensor that automatically activates when the gain is set to 100 or higher. Read noise then drops to as low as 1.0e- while dynamic range stays close to 14 bit. Use lower gain for long exposures and higher gain for short exposures or lucky imaging.
