  • Celestron NexStar Evolution 8 HD Telescope with StarSense

The Celestron NexStar Evolution 8 HD with StarSense combines a 203.2mm EdgeHD optical tube with the revolutionary StarSense AutoAlign system, delivering diffraction-limited views with a Dawes resolution of 0.57 arc seconds. This system gathers 843x more light than the human eye, reaching a limiting stellar magnitude of 14 for observing faint galaxies. Out of the box, the included 40mm and 13mm eyepieces provide 51x and 156x magnification, making it a complete observatory-grade package that aligns itself.

    8" EdgeHD Optics: A 0.57 Arc Second Flat-Field System

At the heart of this telescope is the 8-inch EdgeHD optical system, an aplanatic Schmidt-Cassegrain that corrects for both coma and field curvature. This design produces a perfectly flat focal plane across a 42mm image circle, ensuring stars are sharp pinpoints from the center to the edge of the view, even in wide-field eyepieces or on large camera sensors. With StarBright XLT coatings maximizing light transmission, the 2032mm focal length provides the power to resolve details down to 0.57 arc seconds, splitting tight double stars and revealing fine structure in planetary cloud bands.

Go-Anywhere WiFi Control with a 9.6V Internal Battery

The NexStar Evolution mount is engineered for portability and remote operation. An internal 9.6V, 4.5Ah Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery provides up to 10 hours of continuous use, eliminating the need for external power packs or cable clutter. Built-in WiFi allows you to control the telescope wirelessly from your smartphone or tablet using Celestron's SkyPortal app, putting the entire 40,000-object database at your fingertips without a hand control.

    • Robust Platform: The sturdy single-fork-arm mount and stainless steel tripod, with 38.1mm diameter legs, can handle the 14 lb optical tube with a total instrument capacity of 25 lbs, leaving ample room for cameras and accessories.
    • Smart Design: Features like 4 auxiliary ports, a USB charging port, and an accessory tray with eyepiece holders are integrated for convenience during long observing sessions.

StarSense AutoAlign: From Power-On to Observing in Minutes

Celestron's StarSense technology completely automates the alignment process. Instead of manually identifying and centering stars, you simply turn the telescope on. StarSense uses its built-in camera to scan the sky, identify star patterns, and calculate its exact position. This automatic, three-minute alignment procedure means you spend your time observing, not setting up. You can initiate the entire process from the SkyPortal app on your phone, making it the fastest and easiest way to begin exploring the night sky.

Astrograph-Ready: Brass Gears and f/2 Fastar Compatibility

The NexStar Evolution 8 HD is a capable imaging platform for both planets and deep-sky objects. It is the only fork-mounted telescope in its class to feature high-precision brass worm gears and improved motors, providing superior tracking accuracy for imaging. For ultra-fast, wide-field astrophotography, the optical tube is Fastar-compatible, allowing you to replace the secondary mirror and image at an incredible f/2 focal ratio with an optional lens assembly. While the native Alt-Az tracking is excellent for planetary and lunar imaging, adding an optional equatorial wedge unlocks the mount's potential for long-exposure deep-sky astrophotography.

Why Choose EdgeHD? Evolution 8 HD vs. a Standard 8" SCT

While a standard Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope offers excellent views, the EdgeHD optical design provides a critical advantage for both visual observers and imagers. A standard SCT has a curved focal plane, causing stars at the edge of the field to appear slightly bloated or out of focus. The EdgeHD system corrects this, delivering a flat field that renders every star as a sharp point across the entire view. For astrophotography, this means you get pristine images without needing a separate field flattener accessory. For visual use, it means open clusters like the Pleiades (M45) are perfectly sharp from edge to edge in a wide-field eyepiece.

  • What is the main advantage of the NexStar Evolution 8 HD with StarSense?

The key advantages are speed and image quality. StarSense AutoAlign automates the setup process, getting you observing within minutes of turning the power on. The 8" EdgeHD optics provide a coma-free, flat-field view, which means stars are perfectly sharp across the entire field of view—a critical feature for astrophotography and discerning visual observers.

How does the integrated battery on the NexStar Evolution 8 HD perform?

The integrated 9.6V, 4.5Ah Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery is designed to last for a full night of observing, providing up to 10 hours of power on a single charge. This eliminates the need for external power tanks and cables, making your setup cleaner, safer, and more portable.

Can I use the NexStar Evolution 8 HD for serious deep-sky astrophotography?

Yes, with an accessory. In its standard Alt-Azimuth configuration, it's excellent for imaging the Moon and planets, and for short, unguided exposures of bright deep-sky objects. For long-exposure astrophotography, you will need to add the Celestron Wedge for NexStar Evolution, which converts the mount to an equatorial platform and eliminates field rotation.

How will the NexStar Evolution 8 HD perform on Jupiter from my backyard?

The 8" aperture and 2032mm focal length are ideal for planetary viewing. With the included 13mm eyepiece providing 156x magnification, you can easily resolve Jupiter's main cloud bands, the Great Red Spot, and its four Galilean moons. The EdgeHD optics ensure maximum contrast and sharpness, revealing subtle details when seeing conditions are good.

Can the 8" EdgeHD optics frame the entire Andromeda Galaxy (M31)?

Not in a single view at its native f/10 focal length. The Andromeda Galaxy is very large. To capture it entirely, you would need to use the telescope in its f/2 Fastar configuration with an optional lens assembly and a suitable camera. Alternatively, an optional f/7 focal reducer for EdgeHD will provide a wider field of view than the native f/10, allowing you to capture larger sections of the galaxy.

Do I need the hand control if I have the SkyPortal app for the NexStar Evolution 8 HD?

No, the hand control is not necessary for operation. The telescope's built-in WiFi allows for full control—including alignment with StarSense and slewing to any of the 40,000 objects in the database—directly from your smartphone or tablet running the free SkyPortal app.
