Launch Visual AssistantThe Explore Scientific 92° ED Series 14mm Waterproof Eyepiece combines a moderate 14mm focal length with an immense 92° apparent field of view . It has 9 elements in 6 groups with extra-low dispersion (ED) glass, 18mm of eye relief and a 20.6mm field stop, in a tapered 2" barrel and an O-ring sealed, argon-purged housing.
You may be startled at the wide expanse of inky black sky the first time you look through a 92° Series eyepiece, and may even forget there is an eyepiece between you and the universe. The 14mm is a powerful combination of moderate magnification and an ultra wide field, well suited to targets from planetary detail to deep sky exploration.
The wide field lets you take in more of the sky at once while keeping focus on your target.
The 14mm uses 9 elements in 6 groups, including extra-low dispersion (ED) glass. ED glass offers reduced color fringing, sharper high-contrast views and better performance at high magnification.
ED glass has a high Abbe number, meaning it has a reduced tendency to separate white light into its component colors. This keeps the colors focused together, so subtle differences in star color or planetary tones are closer to reality.
The 14mm has 18mm of eye relief. The 92° ED Series offers long eye relief, serving up great views with reduced eyestrain, and comfortable viewing during extended sessions.
Each eyepiece is O-ring sealed and purged with an inert gas to create a waterproof environment, with a waterproof, fog-proof housing.
The tapered 2" barrel adds extra security. The eyepiece measures 141mm long and 60mm wide; the catalog gives no weight.
The 14mm focal length determines the magnification you will achieve with your specific telescope. To calculate it, simply divide your telescope's focal length by the eyepiece's focal length. For example, in a telescope with a 2000mm focal length, this eyepiece provides 143x (2000mm / 14mm).
The true field of view (TFoV), how much actual sky the eyepiece shows, depends on the 20.6mm field stop diameter. You can approximate the TFoV in degrees by using the formula: (Field Stop / Telescope Focal Length) * 57.3. In that same 2000mm focal length telescope, the TFoV would be approximately 0.59° ((20.6 / 2000) * 57.3).
The 14mm is well suited to a wide range of targets, from planetary detail to deep sky exploration, and a strong all around performer within the 92° series.
About 143x and a true field of about 0.59°.
Each eyepiece is O-ring sealed and purged with an inert gas to create a waterproof environment, giving a fog-proof housing.
Explore Scientific builds the whole 92° ED Series with a tapered 2" barrel; the 14mm body is 60mm wide.
18mm, a long eye relief for reduced eyestrain. The specifications do not state how much of the field eyeglass wearers see.
Extra-Low Dispersion (ED) glass has a high Abbe number, so it spreads white light into colors less. This gives reduced color fringing, sharper high-contrast views and truer color.
You can calculate an accurate approximation of the true field of view (TFoV) using the eyepiece's 20.6mm field stop diameter and your telescope's focal length. The formula is: TFoV ≈ (20.6mm / Telescope Focal Length in mm) × 57.3. This will tell you the actual patch of sky, in degrees, that you will see.
Because the Explore Scientific 14mm 92° eyepiece has a 2-inch barrel, it is compatible with Explore Scientific's 2-inch focal extenders. These include the FE02-020 (2x) and FE03-020 (3x) models, which will double or triple the eyepiece's magnification, respectively.
The magnification depends entirely on your telescope's focal length. The formula is: Magnification = Telescope Focal Length (mm) / 14mm. For example, a telescope with a 1200mm focal length will yield 86x, while a 2800mm focal length telescope will produce 200x.
Clean only the outer lenses, and only when needed. Do not open the eyepiece; the seal protects the inside.
