Laser collimator or Cheshire?
A Cheshire is more accurate and needs no batteries but requires more light and patience. A laser is faster and works in the dark, but its accuracy depends entirely on the barrel fitting the focuser without play. Many observers use both.
How often should I collimate a Newtonian?
Check every session for fast scopes below f/5, where a small misalignment visibly softens the image. Slower Newtonians hold collimation for weeks unless transported roughly.
Does a Bahtinov mask help with visual observing?
Its main value is in imaging, where you are judging focus on a screen. Visually it can help confirm focus on a bright star, but most observers find direct focusing adequate at the eyepiece.
