  • Pegasus Astro eXternal Motor Controller (XMC)

The Pegasus Astro eXternal Motor Controller (XMC) expands the capabilities of your Powerbox setup by adding a dedicated, high-power focus controller that drives stepper motors up to 2 Amps per coil. Designed to integrate seamlessly with the Ultimate Powerbox (v2/v3), Pocket Powerbox Advance, and Pocket Powerbox Micro, the XMC connects via the EXT port, requiring no separate USB cable. Measuring just 66mm x 66mm x 28mm, it provides the robust current needed for large, demanding focus motors while maintaining a clean, cable-managed observatory setup.

Add a 2nd Focuser with 2 Amps of Drive Current

For imagers running dual telescopes or those with focusers requiring more torque, the eXternal Motor Controller is the ideal expansion. It delivers up to 2 Amps of current per motor coil, sufficient for large bipolar or unipolar stepper motors found on heavy-duty focusers. This allows you to add a second, fully independent focuser to an Ultimate Powerbox v2/v3 or add focus control for the first time to a Pocket Powerbox Advance or Micro, all managed from the same central software.

Software-Configurable 1/8 Microstepping for Precision Focus

Achieving critical focus demands fine control. The XMC supports software-configurable microstepping, allowing you to select from Full, Half, 1/4, or 1/8 step resolution. Using 1/8 microstepping increases the number of steps per revolution, resulting in smoother motor rotation and higher positioning accuracy, which is essential for locking in sharp stars with automated focusing routines.

USB-Free Control via the Powerbox EXT Port

The eXternal Motor Controller simplifies cable management by eliminating the need for a USB connection back to your PC. It connects directly to the EXT (expansion) port on a compatible Pegasus Powerbox using the included 60cm RJ12 cable. The Powerbox automatically recognizes the XMC, integrating it into the Unity Platform software for a clean, plug-and-play solution that reduces potential driver conflicts and frees up valuable USB ports.

Broad Compatibility with Starlight, Moonlite, and Robofocus Motors

The XMC was engineered to work with a wide range of popular aftermarket focus motors. It has been successfully tested with motors from Starlight (HSM/MSM), Moonlite, Robofocus, Lakeside, and others. A standard RJ45 socket serves as the motor output, and specific cables are available to match the unique pinouts of each manufacturer, ensuring reliable operation regardless of your focuser brand.

    • Daisy-Chain Capable: A second EXT port on the XMC allows you to connect additional Pegasus devices, such as an environmental sensor, without occupying another port on your main Powerbox.
    • Full Protection: The controller features integrated protection against undervoltage, overcurrent, and overtemperature events, safeguarding your equipment.
  • Which Pegasus devices are compatible with the eXternal Motor Controller?

The eXternal Motor Controller is designed to work as an expansion for the Ultimate Powerbox v2, Ultimate Powerbox v3, Pocket Powerbox Advance, and Pocket Powerbox Micro. It connects to the EXT port on these units.

Does the eXternal Motor Controller require its own USB cable?

No, it does not. The controller communicates directly with a compatible Powerbox through the RJ12 EXT port, which simplifies cabling and frees up a USB port on your computer or hub.

What is the advantage of the 2 Amp drive current on the eXternal Motor Controller?

The 2 Amps per coil drive current allows the XMC to power heavy-duty, high-torque stepper motors often used on large telescopes or with heavy imaging trains. This ensures reliable, slip-free focusing where lower-power controllers might struggle.

How do I connect the eXternal Motor Controller to my Ultimate Powerbox v3 and a Moonlite focuser?

First, connect the XMC to the EXT port of your Ultimate Powerbox v3 using the supplied RJ12 cable. Power the XMC using the 2.1mm DC cable from one of the Powerbox's 12V outputs. Finally, connect your Moonlite motor to the RJ45 port on the XMC using the appropriate motor cable (PEG-CMOT-RJ45DB9).

Can the eXternal Motor Controller handle the large stepper motor on my heavy imaging setup with a Ritchey-Chrétien telescope?

Yes. With its 2 Amp drive current, the XMC is specifically designed for such scenarios. It can reliably drive the larger stepper motors needed to move heavy focusers and imaging payloads on instruments like RCs or SCTs without stalling.

Do I need to buy a separate motor cable for the eXternal Motor Controller?

It depends. While the XMC includes the RJ12 and DC power cables, the motor-specific RJ45 cable is typically included with the Pegasus Motor Focus Kit. If you are using a third-party motor (e.g., Starlight, Robofocus), you will need to purchase the specific cable that matches its pinout.
