How does the FTM-C6 Micro Focuser improve on the stock Celestron knob?
The stock knob on a Celestron SCT moves the primary mirror in steps that are often too coarse for critical focusing at high power. The Starlight Instruments FTM-C6 Micro Focuser replaces the stock knob assembly with a dual-speed unit: black coarse knob and brass fine knob at a 10:1 ratio. It still moves the primary mirror, but the fine knob makes small focus changes much easier.
Does the FTM-C6 Micro Focuser eliminate mirror shift?
No. The focuser attaches to the telescope's existing focus shaft and moves the primary mirror to achieve focus, just like the original knob. Therefore, it does not eliminate image shift or "mirror flop" inherent in the telescope's mechanical design. Its purpose is to provide much finer control over that movement, not to replace the mechanism itself.
Will the FTM-C6 help me get a sharper focus on Jupiter with my Celestron 6" Evolution?
It helps. Focusing on planets at high magnification needs very small adjustments, and a coarse stock knob easily jumps past the point of best focus. The FTM-C6's 10:1 fine-focus knob lets you make those small adjustments; the seeing and the optics still set how much detail you see.
How do I know if the FTM-C6 Micro Focuser will fit my Celestron 6SE?
You need to perform two quick checks. First, measure the outer diameter of the flange on your current focuser where it attaches to the telescope's rear cell; Celestron uses both 1.5" (38mm) and 1.6" (40.6mm) flanges, and Starlight does not say which one this part fits, so tell us your measurement before ordering. Second, if your telescope is less than a few years old, look at the rear cell. If it is flat, you need the standard "C" model. If it has a triangular pattern, you need the "CPC" version.
What tools are needed to install the FTM-C6 Micro Focuser?
Installation is straightforward. Starlight Instruments includes the required 2.5mm hex wrench and mounting screws. You will also need a Phillips screwdriver and a 1/2" or adjustable wrench. Position the telescope tube horizontally before you start.
Is the FTM-C6 Micro Focuser difficult to install myself?
Starlight's instructions are written for owners to follow. Keep the tube horizontal so the primary mirror cannot move, then follow the nine steps: remove the old knob and focus assembly, fit the brass stop on the focus shaft, and attach the Micro Focuser with the three screws. Keep the C-clip or screw you take off, since it goes back on.
Are there any Celestron 6" telescopes the FTM-C6 will not fit?
It fits the Celestron 6" Evolution and some 6SE telescopes. On a 6SE, the flange size and the style of the rear cell decide whether this part fits, so measure and tell us before ordering. A C-clip on the focus shaft is not a problem: the instructions remove it and put it back.
Can I motorize the FTM-C6 Feather Touch focuser later?
Yes. The Handy Stepper Motor (HSM20) fits any Feather Touch Micro Focuser. It runs on the Focuser Boss II or EFS controller.
Does the FTM-C6 help when focusing a camera?
Yes. The 10:1 fine knob lets you make small adjustments while you watch star size on the camera, and the HSM20 motor can automate those adjustments later. The focuser still moves the primary mirror, as the stock knob does.
What is the FTM-C6 Micro Focuser made of?
Hardened stainless steel, steel and aluminum construction and an anodized aluminum fine focus knob are among the Feather Touch standard features. It is designed, machined and assembled in the USA.
