Switchable Red/Green Reticle with Adjustable Brightness

This finder allows you to choose between red or green illumination for its reticle. Red is ideal for preserving dark adaptation during nighttime observing, while green can provide higher contrast against a twilight sky or for users who find green easier to see. Multiple brightness settings let you dial in the perfect intensity for conditions ranging from full daylight to a dark, moonless night.

Starlight Red-Green Dot Finder vs. Magnifying Finderscopes

Unlike a traditional optical finderscope, a zero-magnification reflex sight like this one provides an intuitive aiming experience. The view through the finder is not magnified, so the star patterns you see match the naked-eye view, making it faster to point your telescope at bright objects.

    • Magnifying Finderscope Advantage: A 9x50 finderscope will show much fainter stars, which is essential for locating objects in sparse star fields. However, its narrow field of view and often inverted image can be disorienting.
    • Red-Green Dot Finder Advantage: This finder superimposes a reticle on the sky without altering the background view. This "heads-up display" approach makes it exceptionally easy to quickly align your main telescope on planets, the Moon, or bright deep-sky objects like the Orion Nebula (M42).
  • How do I switch between the red and green reticle on the Starlight Instruments Finder?

The Starlight Instruments Red-Green Dot Finder uses a control knob to cycle through its settings. Turning it will switch between the red and green illumination options and adjust the multiple brightness levels for each color.

Is the Starlight Red-Green Dot Finder bright enough to align my 8" SCT during the day?

Yes. The finder is designed for both daylight and nighttime use. The green reticle option and multiple brightness settings provide enough intensity to be clearly visible against a bright blue sky, making it suitable for daytime solar viewing (with a proper main-scope filter) or initial GoTo alignment on terrestrial objects.

When star-hopping to the Andromeda Galaxy (M31), which color is better to use with the Starlight Finder?

For deep-sky observing, the red reticle is almost always the preferred choice. Red light has the least impact on your eye's dark adaptation, helping you see faint details in your main eyepiece. The green reticle is generally too bright for faint objects and is better suited for twilight or daytime use.
