QHYCCD
QHYCCD has spent the past decade putting large-format cooled sensors within reach of amateur budgets, and pairing them with the supporting hardware — filter wheels, off-axis guiders, polar alignment cameras — needed to actually use them. The result is a catalogue that spans a compact guide camera and a full-frame scientific-grade imaging system. David Astro carries QHYCCD products in Canada, in stock and shipped from our Canadian warehouse.
Sensor choice, filter sizing and back-focus are tightly linked in this line, particularly with the larger formats. Send us your telescope and we will work out the whole train before you order.

View full detailsThe QHYCCD Product Range
QHY organizes largely around sensor format, with matched accessories designed to keep the imaging train short and the spacing predictable.
- Cooled deep-sky cameras: Regulated thermoelectric cooling with anti-dew heating on the sensor window, in APS-C through full-frame and larger formats, monochrome and one-shot colour.
- Guide cameras: Small, sensitive, high frame rate sensors for guiding and planetary capture, widely used with both guide scopes and off-axis guiders.
- Filter wheels: Motorized wheels in several filter sizes, designed to integrate with the cameras at a known back-focus so spacing arithmetic stays simple.
- Off-axis guiders: Pick off a guide star from the main optical path, eliminating the differential flexure that a separate guide scope can introduce at long focal length.
- Polar alignment cameras: Electronic polar alignment that reaches high accuracy in minutes and works when Polaris is behind a building.
- Large-format scientific sensors: Very large chips for wide-field survey-style imaging, which demand correctors and filters sized to match.
Why Choose David Astro for QHYCCD
Large sensors amplify every weakness elsewhere in the system. That is where the specification work goes.
- Corrector coverage checked: A full-frame sensor needs a corrector that actually covers the field. We verify this before recommending a camera, because the corrector is often the real constraint.
- Filter sizing calculated: We size filters against sensor diagonal and filter-to-sensor distance so the corners are not clipped by an undersized filter.
- Complete back-focus list: Camera, wheel, off-axis guider and spacers are specified together to hit the corrector's design distance exactly.
- Authorized dealer: Full manufacturer warranty and verified authenticity, with service handled inside Canada.
- Canadian stock: Ships domestically with no duties or brokerage fees for Canadian buyers.
QHYCCD in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need an off-axis guider or a guide scope?
- Guide scopes are simpler and fine below roughly 800 mm focal length. Beyond that, differential flexure between two tubes becomes larger than your guiding tolerance, and an off-axis guider is the reliable answer.
- Which sensor size should I choose?
- Whichever your corrector covers well. A full-frame camera behind a corrector rated for APS-C gives soft, elongated corners. Tell us your telescope and corrector and we will say what it can actually illuminate.
- How much cooling do I need?
- Enough to reach a stable set point you can hold on warm nights as well as cold ones, since your calibration frames must match. Being able to hold minus 10 in July matters more than reaching minus 30 in January.
- Is warranty handled domestically?
- Yes. As an authorized dealer we process warranty and diagnostics in Canada, so a cooling fault does not require international shipping.
Specifying a QHY imaging train?
