Used & Certified Open Box
Astronomy equipment ages well. Optics that are cared for hold their performance for decades, and a well-maintained mount from ten years ago can still out-track a new budget one. The risk in used equipment is not age, it is not knowing what you are getting — which is why everything in this collection is inspected and tested here first. David Astro lists used items in Canada, shipping from Canadian stock.
We describe condition honestly, including cosmetic marks, and we tell you what has been tested. If you want more detail on a specific item, ask and we will look at it again.

View full detailsHow We Assess Used Equipment
Different equipment types age in different ways, so each is checked against what actually degrades.
- Optics: Coatings inspected for scratches, cleaning marks, fungus and delamination; collimation checked and corrected where the design allows.
- Mounts: Slewing and tracking tested in both axes, backlash and worm mesh assessed, and electronics and hand controllers verified on power.
- Cameras: Cooling performance measured against ambient, sensor checked for hot columns and dust, and shutter or filter mechanisms exercised where present.
- Focusers and mechanicals: Travel checked for smoothness and slip under load, with tension adjusted where needed.
- Completeness recorded: We list what is included — cables, caps, adapters, cases — because missing accessories are the most common disappointment in a used purchase.
- Cosmetic condition stated: Marks and wear are described rather than photographed favourably.
Why Choose David Astro for Used Astronomy Equipment
The value of buying used from a dealer rather than privately is that someone qualified has already looked at it.
- Tested before listing: Every item is functionally checked here, so you are not relying on a seller's description of equipment they may not have used recently.
- Compatibility advice included: We will confirm that a used tube, mount or camera actually works with what you already own before you commit.
- Support after purchase: Setup help and in-house diagnostics apply to used purchases, which is not something a private sale offers.
- Parts availability checked: We tell you where spare parts for an older model are still obtainable and where they are not.
- Ships from Canada: Domestic delivery with no duties or brokerage fees, and no risk of a cross-border return on a private-sale item.
Used Equipment in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions
- Does used equipment carry a warranty?
- Manufacturer warranty is generally not transferable on used items. Coverage varies by listing, and we state it clearly. In-house support and diagnostics remain available regardless.
- Are older mounts still worth buying?
- Often yes. Mechanically sound mounts age well and many can be retrofitted with modern control electronics. We check gear condition and electronics before listing and note anything relevant.
- How do I know a used telescope's optics are good?
- We inspect coatings under strong light for scratches, cleaning marks and fungus, and star test where practical. Light cleaning marks affect appearance far more than performance; fungus and delamination do not.
