What does "FRA" mean for the Askar FRA400?
FRA stands for Flat-field Refractive Astrograph. It is a refractor with built-in flat field correction, which can also be used for visual observation. You do not need a separate field flattener.
Do I need to buy a separate field flattener for the Askar FRA400?
No. The quintuplet (5-element) objective lens design has built-in field correction and supports a 44mm image circle. Attach your full-frame or smaller sensor camera and focus.
How does the Askar FRA400's 44mm image circle work with my full-frame camera?
A standard full-frame sensor has a diagonal of approximately 43.3mm. The Askar FRA400's 44mm image circle is slightly larger than that, and the 400mm focal length gives about 5.1 x 3.4 degrees on full frame.
Is the Askar FRA400 suitable for a portable "grab-and-go" setup?
Yes. With an optical tube weight of 2.56kg and a total weight of 2.88kg with rings and dovetail, the Askar FRA400 is light, and its 317mm length makes it easy to transport to dark-sky sites.
What does the 140mm back focus on the Askar FRA400 mean?
Askar measures it from the end of the rotator's M68x1 thread to the focal plane. Your imaging train fits within it, for example:
-
Filter drawer or wheel: For LRGB or narrowband filters.
-
Off-Axis Guider (OAG): For guiding through the main optics.
Askar says you don't need to calculate back focus as long as the object is focused.
Can I use the Askar FRA400 for visual observing?
Yes. The FRA can also be applied in visual observation. The included 2" and 1.25" adapters allow you to use standard diagonals and eyepieces for wide-field views of star clusters like the Pleiades (M45) and large nebulae.
How do I attach my DSLR or mirrorless camera to the FRA400?
You will need a T-ring specific to your camera's lens mount (e.g., Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony E) with an M48 connection, threaded onto the included M68-M48 conical adapter. M48 extension tubes may be needed to reach focus.
Can I use 2-inch filters with the Askar FRA400?
Yes. Use a filter drawer or filter wheel with M48 threads after the included M68-M48 adapter. The optional F3.9 reducer has a built-in M48×0.75 thread for 2-inch filters.
Is it safe to look at the Sun with the Askar FRA400?
No. Do not look at the Sun through the telescope. It will cause irreversible damage to your eyes.
How will the Askar FRA400 and a full-frame camera frame the Cygnus Loop?
The Cygnus Loop, including the Veil Nebula (NGC 6960 and NGC 6992), spans over 3 degrees of the sky. With a full-frame camera, the Askar FRA400's 400mm focal length provides a field of view of roughly 5.1° x 3.4°. This is wide enough to frame the whole loop in one shot.
