Launch Visual AssistantThe Baader Hyperion 68° 13mm is a modular eyepiece from Baader's Hyperion 68° fixed focal length series, designed as a way to get more from a telescope than the simple eyepieces supplied with it. It has 8 lens elements in 5 groups, a 68° apparent field and 20mm of eye relief, and comes with both 1.25" and 2" barrels. Its 7-layer Phantom Group coatings are optimised for the night-adapted eye, and two system threads, M43 and SP54, allow classical and afocal eyepiece projection.
The Hyperion 13mm uses 8 lens elements arranged in 5 groups, with a 68° apparent field, 20mm of eye relief and a 15.4mm field stop (Baader technical data). Baader sums up the series as offering ease of view even at high magnifications, and notes that the rubber eye cap can be stored folded down, especially for persons who wear glasses.
Baader's technical data lists the 13mm in the parfocal group of the series, together with the other focal lengths except the 24mm. Parfocal eyepieces need little refocusing when exchanged.
Every air-to-glass surface in the Hyperion 13mm is treated with Baader's proprietary 7-layer Phantom Group broadband anti-reflection coatings. Baader optimised the coatings to be most effective where the night-adapted eye is most sensitive, at about 520nm in the green part of the spectrum.
The Hyperion 13mm comes with both 1.25" and 2" barrels. The 1.25" barrel fits 1.25" focusers and diagonals, and 1.25" filters screw onto it. For telescopes equipped with a 2" focuser, the entire 1.25" barrel section, which houses the first lens group, simply unscrews.
This reveals the included 2" barrel. The M48 thread between the 1.25" and 2" barrels takes a 2" filter; with a Baader 2" eyepiece filter of 6mm height in place, the focal length becomes 11.7mm. Both barrels have a classic undercut as slip protection.
A key feature of the Hyperion series is its ability to change focal length without a Barlow lens. By unscrewing the 1.25" barrel, you can insert Baader's optional 14mm or 28mm Finetuning Rings (FTRs) between the main eyepiece body and the front lens group. This alters the spacing of the optical elements, reducing the effective focal length and increasing magnification.
This modularity allows you to fine-tune the magnification for specific targets or seeing conditions without introducing additional lenses into the beam, as is unavoidable with a Barlow lens.
Beneath the rubber eye cap and the large silicone thread-protecting ring are two system threads for attaching cameras. All Hyperion eyepieces are suitable for afocal and classical eyepiece projection.
The body has an outer diameter of 58mm; the drawing gives 62.1mm above the reference plane, 24mm for the 1.25" barrel and 47.5mm for the 2" barrel, and the design data gives 387g (our specification table gives a net weight of 0.41 kg). Without the first group of lenses the eyepiece becomes a 2" eyepiece of 22.9mm focal length; use this only for afocal projection imaging, since visual use shows a loss of edge sharpness.
Baader asks that the eyepiece only be opened at the M48 thread at the top of the 1.25" barrel; other joints are secured with Loctite, and disassembly elsewhere voids the warranty. Hyperion 68° eyepieces can also be used on Zeiss Diascope spotting scopes with the Baader Diascope bayonet 1.25" adapter (#2454500), and on Zeiss Harpia spotting scopes with the Harpia 85/95 adapter (#2454511).
The focal length is changed by altering the spacing of the internal lens groups. To do this, you unscrew the 1.25" barrel, which contains the first lens element. You can then thread optional Baader Finetuning Rings (14mm or 28mm) onto the exposed M48 thread of the main eyepiece body before reattaching the 1.25" barrel. Adding these rings reduces the focal length and increases magnification.
Yes. Both a 1.25" and a 2" barrel are included. Unscrewing the 1.25" barrel exposes the 2" barrel for 2" focusers and diagonals.
These are two separate systems for attaching cameras, found under the removable eyecup.
Our listing ships the eyepiece with its 1.25" and 2" barrels, and a soft-leather bag is included. The scope of supply for the Hyperion 68° eyepieces also includes a winged rubber eyeshield, and Baader's specification lists dust caps of 31.8mm (1.25"), 45mm (2") and 46.5mm (fits over the eyecup).
Magnification is the telescope's focal length divided by 13. On a telescope of 1000mm focal length it gives about 77x; with both fine tuning rings (8.1mm) the same telescope gives about 123x. Exit pupil is the eyepiece focal length divided by the telescope's focal ratio.
Yes. When you unscrew the 1.25" barrel to use the eyepiece in a 2" focuser, the exposed M48 filter thread takes a 2" filter, which then sits between the barrels when the 1.25" barrel goes back on (focal length 11.7mm with a Baader 2" eyepiece filter of 6mm height). 1.25" filters screw onto the 1.25" barrel.
This is Baader Planetarium's proprietary 7-layer broadband anti-reflection coating system. It is specifically designed to maximize light transmission where the dark-adapted human eye is most sensitive (around 520nm). Residual reflection is extremely low, so that the least amount of light is lost for a night-adapted eye.
Yes, the Baader Hyperion 13mm is designed to be parfocal with other eyepieces in the Hyperion series (excluding the 24mm). This means you can switch between different focal lengths in the series with little refocusing.
Yes. Without the first group of lenses (in the 1.25" barrel) it becomes a 2" eyepiece of 22.9mm focal length. Use it this way only for afocal projection imaging; in visual observation a loss of edge sharpness will be experienced.
The winged rubber eyeshield of the Hyperion 68° eyepieces is ideal for binocular use. A binoviewer needs a pair of eyepieces of the same focal length; the body diameter is 58mm.
