Launch Visual AssistantThe Baader Hyperion Aspheric 31mm Eyepiece delivers a tack-sharp 72° apparent field of view using an advanced optical design that corrects for aberrations across the entire frame. Engineered for both 1.25" and 2" focusers, this eyepiece uses aspherical lens surfaces to achieve superior image clarity, high contrast, and a remarkably stable viewing experience, challenging eyepieces at much higher price points.
By incorporating aspherical lens surfaces—a technology common in high-end photographic lenses—the Hyperion Aspheric 31mm corrects for distortion and field curvature far more effectively than traditional spherical designs. This results in pinpoint stars from the center to the very edge of the field. The 72° apparent field is a deliberate choice, designed to be fully taken in at a glance without needing to roll your eye to see the edges, providing a comfortable and immersive view.
Baader's Phantom Group Coating is a multi-layer broadband anti-reflection system applied to every glass surface. Each coating group is calculated to be most effective where the human eye has its highest sensitivity—in the green portion of the spectrum. Unlike less expensive coatings that produce a strong green reflection, Phantom Group coatings are nearly colorless, ensuring maximum light is transmitted to your eye for a brighter, higher-contrast image with minimal stray light.
This eyepiece offers more than just a standard push-fit barrel. On the telescope side, a 2" Schmidt-Cassegrain thread allows the eyepiece to be screwed directly onto the rear cell of an SCT, bypassing the diagonal. This configuration provides an exceptionally secure connection and can yield a wider true field of view than is possible with a standard 2" nosepiece. For astrophotography, the eyepiece features threads on the eye-facing side for direct camera attachment, enabling high-magnification projection imaging.
Many extreme wide-angle eyepieces suffer from a "nervous" or critical eye placement, where a slight shift in position causes the image to black out. The Hyperion Aspheric is engineered for comfortable, stable viewing. The forgiving eye placement makes it an ideal choice for public outreach, educational settings, or anyone who finds fussy eyepieces frustrating, ensuring you and others can consistently enjoy the view.
While eyepieces with 80° or wider fields of view are popular, they come with distinct trade-offs that the 72° Aspheric design directly addresses.
The 72° field of the Baader Aspheric is designed to be fully visible without needing to move your eye around. This provides a more comfortable and practical view. It also produces a brighter, higher-contrast image because the light from the telescope is not spread over as wide an area, making it easier to see faint deep-sky objects.
Yes. The eyepiece features threads on the eye lens side that allow you to directly attach a DSLR or other astronomy camera body using appropriate adapters. This method, known as eyepiece projection, is excellent for high-resolution imaging of planets and small deep-sky objects.
The 31mm focal length makes it an excellent low-power "finder" eyepiece for an f/10 SCT. It provides a wide true field of view, allowing you to frame large objects like the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) or the Pleiades (M45) in their entirety. The aspheric design ensures the dense star fields surrounding these objects remain sharp to the edge.
The integrated 2" Schmidt-Cassegrain thread lets you attach the eyepiece directly to the back of an SCT, eliminating the need for a diagonal. This creates a rigid, secure connection and can slightly increase your true field of view by shortening the light path, making it a powerful tool for wide-field sweeping.
Absolutely. Its 31mm focal length provides low magnification and a wide field, making it an ideal eyepiece for locating objects with a Dobsonian. The high light transmission from the Phantom Group coatings and the bright image from the 72° field make it easier to detect faint, diffuse objects like the Veil Nebula (NGC 6960), especially when paired with a nebula filter.
Baader's Phantom Group coatings are advanced multi-layer anti-reflection coatings optimized for visual astronomy. They are engineered to maximize light transmission in the green part of the spectrum, where the dark-adapted human eye is most sensitive. This results in brighter views and higher contrast compared to standard coatings, which often reflect green light.
