  • Baader Maxbright Amici Prism 1.25" w/ Integral 2X Glasspath Corrector

The Baader Maxbright Amici Prism is a dedicated optical component designed to solve two common challenges with binoviewing: it provides a fully corrected, daytime-friendly image and its integrated 2X Glasspath Corrector ensures your binoviewer can reach focus in telescopes with limited back-focus. This 1.25" prism is the ideal solution for turning your astronomical telescope into a high-power terrestrial spotting scope for use with the Maxbright Binoviewer.

Erect-Image Views with the 1.25" Amici Design

Unlike standard star diagonals which produce an image that is upright but reversed left-to-right, an Amici prism delivers a completely correct orientation. This makes navigating the lunar surface or tracking moving terrestrial targets like birds or ships intuitive. The 1.25" barrel fits directly into your telescope's focuser, serving as the diagonal for your Maxbright binoviewer setup.

    • Terrestrial Viewing: The fully erect image makes the Maxbright Amici Prism essential for daytime observation, transforming your telescope into a powerful binocular spotting scope.
    • Astronomical Use: While excellent for casual lunar and wide-field stargazing, the roof-edge design of an Amici prism can introduce a faint diffraction spike on the brightest point-sources like Vega or Jupiter. For critical planetary observation, a traditional prism or mirror diagonal is often preferred.

The Integrated 2X GPC for Focus and Magnification

Many telescopes, especially Newtonians, do not have enough inward focuser travel to accommodate the long light path of a binoviewer. The integrated 2X Glasspath Corrector (GPC) solves this by extending the telescope's focal plane outwards, pushing the focus point to where the binoviewer's eyepieces can reach it. This component also doubles the effective focal length of your telescope, providing higher magnification views that are ideal for detailed lunar and planetary observation.

  • What is the main purpose of the Baader Maxbright Amici Prism?

Its primary purpose is to provide a fully corrected, erect image (upright and not reversed left-to-right) when using the Baader Maxbright Binoviewer. This is essential for terrestrial, daytime viewing and makes navigating the Moon's surface more intuitive. It also includes an integrated 2X Glasspath Corrector to help the binoviewer reach focus.

Will this 2X Glasspath Corrector allow my Maxbright Binoviewer to reach focus in my Newtonian telescope?

Yes, this is precisely what the integrated 2X Glasspath Corrector is for. Newtonian reflectors typically have very little back-focus, and a binoviewer alone will not reach focus. The GPC extends the focal plane, making it possible to achieve a sharp image with the Maxbright Binoviewer in most Newtonians.

Is the Baader Maxbright Amici Prism good for high-power planetary viewing of Jupiter?

While it can be used, it's not the optimal choice for critical planetary viewing. The "roof" design of an Amici prism can create a very faint diffraction spike on extremely bright objects like Jupiter, which may slightly soften the finest details. For the highest-contrast planetary views, a dedicated mirror diagonal or a standard prism diagonal (like the Baader T-2 Zeiss Prism) is generally recommended.

Can I use this Baader Amici Prism without the Maxbright Binoviewer, as a standard diagonal?

No, this unit is designed as an integrated system for the Maxbright Binoviewer. The Glasspath Corrector's optical properties are calculated to work with the light path of the binoviewer. Using it with a single eyepiece would result in a 2X Barlow effect, but it is not optimized for that application.

Why does this Baader prism provide a "correct" image?

It uses an Amici roof prism design. Unlike a simple 90-degree prism or mirror that flips the image once, the roof-shaped surface in an Amici prism introduces an additional reflection. This second reflection corrects the left-right reversal, resulting in an image that matches what you see with your naked eye.

Does the integrated 2X Glasspath Corrector in the Amici Prism affect image brightness?

Yes, any time you increase magnification, you concentrate the same amount of light over a larger area, which makes the resulting image dimmer. The 2X magnification will result in an image that is four times dimmer than the view at 1X. This is a fundamental principle of optics and applies to any Barlow lens or Glasspath Corrector.
