  • Baader Morpheus 76° Eyepiece 12.5mm - 1.25"/2"

The Baader Morpheus 12.5mm 76° Eyepiece delivers a sharp, flat 76° apparent field of view from 8 lenses in 5 groups, with one ED and two lanthanum elements. Eye relief is 20mm and the 1.25" and 2" barrels are integrated into one 55mm housing. The Morpheus eyepieces excel at planetary observation as well as deep-sky objects, and the series was designed for binoviewing.

The 76° Flat-Field Optical System: 8 Elements and 20mm Eye Relief

The Morpheus optical design consists of 8 lens elements arranged in 5 groups, with a 16.8mm field stop. The design gives a sharp image right to the edge of the field with exceedingly low angular magnification distortion, so planets and lunar features keep their shapes as they cross the field.

Eye relief is 20mm. Eyeglass wearers can take in the full field with the Morpheus series, and besides the field, eye relief, the large eye lens and ease of viewing are the factors behind the spacewalk feeling.

    Phantom Coating® Group and Baffling

The Phantom Group multi-coatings, pioneered in the Hyperion line, were further optimised for the Morpheus and index-matched to each of the different glasses, and the internal mechanics have been ray-traced and baffled against stray light and reflections.

Dual 1.25"/2" Barrels with Safety-Kerfs and 21mm Backfocus Gain

Every Morpheus eyepiece has both 1.25" and 2" barrels integrated into one housing. Baader's technical data gives a back focus gain of 21mm when the 2" barrel is used, compared with the 1.25" barrel; the 1.25" barrel is 24mm long and the 2" barrel 21mm.

    • Safety-Kerfs: Baader's Slip-Protect Safety-Kerfs on the 1.25" and 2" barrels are numerous shallow kerfs that give additional grip and security against inadvertent drops from smooth-sided barrels, without the problems sometimes caused by traditional wide undercuts.
    • Filter thread: The eyepiece is threaded for filters, with M28.5 as the lens-side inner connection.

    Eyecups and M43 Extension

Two eyecups fit the eyepiece's M43 connection.

    • Standard Folding Eyecup: A soft rubber eyecup with an integral M43-threaded metal ring, which keeps it securely attached when folded up or down.
    • Winged Eyecup: A second eyecup with a foldable side shield, which provides comfort and exclusion of stray light for binoviewing with eyeglasses.
    • M43/M43 Extension: The 7.5mm extension (#2954250) optimises the position of the eyecup for your personal viewing position, adapts cameras with an M43 thread and serves as a clamping surface for smartphone holders.

The M43 Thread for Eyepiece Projection and Afocal Imaging

Concealed beneath the rubber eyeguard is an M43 thread, for photography and video. The distortion of the Morpheus is even lower than in the Hyperion eyepieces, and the flat field design suits photographic projection.

With the optional M43/T-2 adapter (#2958080), the Astro T-2 System and T-2 camera rings can be used for classical eyepiece projection; for afocal projection the M43/SP54 extension ring (#2954251) opens the Hyperion DT-ring system. A C-Mount adapter (#2958520) is also available for screwing matching cameras onto the eyepiece.

Optimized for Binoviewing: A Slim 55mm Body and Maximum Nose Clearance

Baader designed the Morpheus series for binoviewing: a 55mm outer housing diameter throughout the series allows binoviewing from 55mm interpupillary distance, even for children, and the body has been made as small as possible for nose clearance.

The net weight is 0.42 kg; the technical data gives 345g for the eyepiece and 84mm for the body above the reference plane. The field stop displacement is 0mm for this focal length, so it is parfocal with the 4.5mm to 14mm Morpheus; the 17.5mm differs by +2.5mm.

Mechanical Design: Luminescent Lettering and Grip

The Morpheus body is machined from hard aluminum alloy with a UV-stabilized anodized finish. The weight is essentially the lenses plus the protection and water resistance it can supply.

    • Photo-Luminescent Engraving: Baader's luminescent lettering glows in a soft green after the eyepiece has been in the light or briefly lit with a flashlight; the main letters shine for up to three minutes, so the focal length can be recognised in the dark.
    • Rubber Grip Ring: A wide waffle-patterned rubber grip ring provides handling security.

A Comprehensive Accessory Package: Holster, Clips, and More

Our box list names the eyepiece with the M43/M43 extension, the folding rubber eyecup, the winged eyecup, and the holster with focal length indicator clip.

    • Eyepiece Holster: The Cordura pouch protects the eyepiece and can be used as a belt pouch or attached to a tripod.
    • Focal-Length Indicator Clip: A stainless steel clip attaches to the holster. By bending up one of the "fingers," you can create a tactile indicator for the focal length, allowing you to identify the eyepiece by touch in complete darkness.
    • Dust caps: Baader's specification lists dust caps of 31.8mm (1.25"), 45mm (2") and 46.5mm (fits over the eyecup).
  • What are the main features of the Morpheus 12.5mm?

It offers a sharp, flat 76° field, eye relief (here 20mm) with a large eye lens, and exceedingly low angular magnification distortion, so the stated 76° is the true value. The series is also designed for binoviewing, with a 55mm body throughout.

What magnification does the Morpheus 12.5mm give?

Magnification is the telescope's focal length divided by 12.5mm; on a telescope of 1000mm focal length the 12.5mm gives about 80x. Exit pupil is the eyepiece focal length divided by the telescope's focal ratio.

Why is the Morpheus 12.5mm suited to binoviewing?

Baader designed the Morpheus series for binoviewing: a 55mm outer housing diameter throughout the series allows binoviewing from 55mm interpupillary distance, even for children, and the body has been made as small as possible for nose clearance. A winged eyecup is supplied for binoviewing with eyeglasses.

How do I attach a camera to the Morpheus 12.5mm eyepiece?

You can attach a camera by unscrewing the foldable rubber eyecup to reveal a standard M43 male thread. With the optional M43/T-2 adapter (#2958080), virtually any DSLR or system camera can be used through T-2 camera rings for classical eyepiece projection.

Can I use filters with the Morpheus 12.5mm?

The Morpheus 12.5mm is threaded for filters, with M28.5 (the 1.25" filter thread) as the lens-side inner connection. No 2" filter thread is listed.

What are the two different eyecups for on the Morpheus 12.5mm?

The Morpheus 12.5mm includes two styles of eyecups for different applications. The pre-installed cup is a standard foldable rubber eyeguard for general use, which can be folded down for eyeglass wearers. A second, special winged eyeguard is also included. It provides comfort and exclusion of stray light for binoviewing with eyeglasses.

What is the purpose of the "Safety-Kerfs" on the Morpheus 12.5mm barrels?

Baader's Slip-Protect Safety-Kerfs on the 1.25" and 2" barrels are numerous shallow kerfs that give additional grip and security against inadvertent drops from smooth-sided barrels, without the problems sometimes caused by traditional wide undercuts.

How does the luminescent engraving on the Morpheus 12.5mm work?

Baader's luminescent lettering glows in a soft green after the eyepiece has been in the light or briefly lit with a flashlight; the main letters shine for up to three minutes, so the focal length can be recognised in the dark. Baader makes no statement about its effect on dark adaptation.

How does the integrated 2" barrel on the Morpheus 12.5mm save focus travel?

The 2" barrel is integrated into the eyepiece. Baader's technical data gives a back focus gain of 21mm when the 2" barrel is used, compared with the 1.25" barrel.

Is the Baader Morpheus 12.5mm parfocal with other Morpheus eyepieces?

The Morpheus eyepieces from 4.5mm to 14mm are parfocal: the technical data gives a field stop displacement of 0mm for them and +2.5mm for the 17.5mm, so the 17.5mm needs a small focus change.

What does the Morpheus 12.5mm weigh?

The net weight is 0.42 kg; the Morpheus technical data gives 345g for the eyepiece. The technical data are based on unaltered mechanical and optical design data.

What is the included eyepiece holster and indicator clip for the Morpheus 12.5mm?

The holster is a protective Cordura pouch that can be attached to your belt or tripod for convenient access. The stainless steel focal length indicator clip attaches to the holster; bending up one or more of its fingers according to the focal length lets you identify the eyepiece by touch, without a flashlight.
