  • Which specific mounts is the CGE Universal Mounting Plate compatible with?

    This plate is designed for a direct fit onto the saddle of Celestron CGE, CGE Pro, CGEM, and CGEM-DX series equatorial mounts. It is not a standard dovetail bar and will not fit Vixen or Losmandy-style saddle clamps.

    Can I attach my DSLR camera directly to the CGE Mounting Plate?

    Yes. The plate features standard 1/4”-20 threaded holes, which is the same thread size used on the base of most DSLR and mirrorless cameras. For better pointing control, it is recommended to mount the camera on a ball head, which can then be attached to the plate.

    What screw sizes does the CGE Universal Mounting Plate accept?

    The plate is pre-drilled and tapped for three of the most common imperial thread sizes used in astronomy and photography:

    • 1/4”-20
    • 5/16”-18
    • 3/8”-16
    This allows you to attach a wide variety of accessories using standard, readily available bolts.

    Do I need to buy mounting rings to use this CGE plate with my telescope?

    Yes, in most cases. This plate provides the flat, drilled surface to which you will attach a set of telescope mounting rings. The rings then clamp around your optical tube. The plate itself does not clamp directly to the telescope.

    How is this CGE plate different from a Losmandy-style dovetail bar?

    A Losmandy dovetail bar is designed to slide into a saddle clamp for quick attachment and removal. This CGE Universal Mounting Plate bolts directly onto the mount's saddle platform, providing a more permanent, semi-fixed connection that is very rigid but does not offer quick-release convenience.

    Can I use this plate to piggyback a camera on my main telescope with a CGEM II mount?

    This plate is designed to be the primary mounting platform, replacing a dovetail bar. To piggyback a camera, you would typically attach a smaller dovetail bar or accessory plate to the top of your main telescope's tube rings, not use this plate.
