  • Celestron CGX-L Equatorial 1100 HD Telescope

The Celestron CGX-L Equatorial 1100 HD Telescope combines the 11" EdgeHD optical system with the CGX-L, which Celestron calls the pinnacle of its computerized equatorial mounts. Its 279.4mm aperture gathers 1593x more light than the human eye and has a 0.42 arc second Dawes limit. The CGX-L carries a 75 lb instrument load. The integrated NexStar+ controller puts a database of over 40,000 celestial objects at your fingertips.

    11" EdgeHD Optics: A 42mm Flat-Field Corrected to 0.42 Arc Seconds

The 11" EdgeHD optical tube is an aplanatic Schmidt-Cassegrain designed to reduce more than off-axis star coma, with an astrograph-quality flat focal plane across a 42mm field. At its native f/10, Celestron says, you get the image scale to capture the smallest deep-sky objects.

Celestron's proprietary StarBright XLT optical coatings are applied to every surface for maximum light throughput. The focal plane is more than three times flatter than a standard Schmidt-Cassegrain, and Celestron's final acceptance test checks every EdgeHD for sharp stars at the center and each corner of a full-frame camera.

Imaging-Focused Tube Design: Mirror Clutches, Vents, and f/2 Versatility

Beyond the optics, the EdgeHD tube incorporates mechanical features essential for astrophotography. Flexible tension clutches hold the primary mirror in place after focusing and reduce image shift during long exposures, without putting force on the mirror assembly.

The rear cell has cooling vents that allow hot air to escape from behind the primary mirror. Each vent has an integrated 50-mesh filter that lets air out without letting dust in. For ultimate imaging flexibility, all EdgeHD optical tubes are Fastar-compatible. The secondary mirror can be replaced with a third-party lens accessory for ultra-fast f/2 wide-field imaging, and the optional 0.7x reducer for the 1100 (#94241) widens the field.

CGX-L Mount: A 75 lb Capacity Platform with DC Servo Motors

The CGX-L mount is engineered for backyard observatories and remote imagers who demand exceptional stability for heavy payloads. It carries 75 lbs; the 11" tube weighs 28 lbs. Its larger 144mm worm wheels give smoother operation and drive heavier loads more accurately, and a longer 270mm saddle supports larger tubes.

DC servo motors slew at up to 3° per second. Cable management is improved, home and limit optical sensors make it remote-operation friendly, and the latitude range is 3° to 65°.

Heavy-Duty Support: A 2.75" Steel Tripod and Dual Dovetail Saddle

The CGX-L tripod has 2.75" diameter steel legs, weighs 46.2 lbs and comes with an accessory tray.

The mount head features a dual dovetail saddle compatible with both narrow CG-5 (Vixen-style) and wider CGE (Losmandy D-style) dovetail bars. The 11" EdgeHD comes on a CGE dovetail bar.

NexStar+ and CPWI: A 40,000+ Object Database with PC Control

The system is controlled by the venerable NexStar+ hand controller, which provides access to a database of over 40,000 celestial objects. Alignment procedures like 2-Star Align and Quick Align get you observing quickly, while the controller offers tracking rates for sidereal, solar, and lunar targets. For advanced users, Celestron’s All-Star Polar Alignment routine works without a view of Polaris.

For a more powerful experience, the included CPWI Telescope Control Software connects through the mount's USB port and gives a graphical interface and advanced mount modeling.

A Complete Imaging System: Back Focus, Guiding, and Remote Operation

The 1100 HD is designed as an end-to-end imaging solution. The optical system has an optimal back focus of 146.05mm (5.75") from the rear cell's 3.29"-16 tpi threads, a back focus Celestron calls generous. The CGX-L mount features two autoguide ports and four auxiliary ports, with AUX 3 and 4 and an autoguide port next to the saddle.

The mount also supports Periodic Error Correction (PPEC), which records the periodic error once and keeps the correction.

  • Can I use a full-frame DSLR with the Celestron CGX-L 1100 HD?

Yes. The 11" EdgeHD optical design produces a corrected, flat-field 42mm image circle, and Celestron's final acceptance test checks every EdgeHD for sharp images at the center and each corner of a full-frame (24x36mm, 42mm diagonal) camera.

How does the Celestron 1100 HD perform on planets?

Celestron says every EdgeHD should resolve double stars to the Dawes limit (0.42 arc seconds here), show subtle shadings in Jupiter's belts and reveal the Cassini Division in Saturn's rings on a night of good seeing, and a Barlow lets imagers reach f/22 to f/32.

Is the Celestron CGX-L 1100 HD system portable?

While it can be transported, it is a very heavy system not designed for casual portability. The total weight is substantial, and it breaks down into several heavy components: the optical tube (28 lbs), the mount head (52.6 lbs), the tripod (46.2 lbs), and two 22 lb counterweights. Celestron says the CGX-L suits backyard observatories and remote imagers.

What do I need to convert the 1100 HD to f/2 for wide-field imaging?

A third-party Fastar lens accessory, sold separately, that takes the place of the removable secondary mirror.

What software is included with the CGX-L 1100 HD telescope?

The telescope includes a comprehensive software package. You get the CPWI Telescope Control Software for advanced control from a PC, Celestron's Starry Night Special Edition Software for exploring the night sky, and access to the SkyPortal App.

Do I need to see Polaris to polar align the CGX-L mount?

No. The CGX-L mount and NexStar+ controller feature Celestron's All-Star Polar Alignment procedure. After aligning on stars, the mount slews to where a bright star would be if accurately polar aligned, and you center it with the mount's latitude and azimuth adjustments.

What power supply does the CGX-L 1100 HD require?

The mount requires a 12V DC power source capable of supplying at least 3 amps of current. A DC power cable is included, portable 12V field batteries work, and Celestron's AC to 12V DC 5A supply with a threaded barrel connector is recommended.

Can I use my 1.25" eyepieces with this telescope?

Yes. The telescope comes with a 2" star diagonal that includes a 1.25" adapter. This allows you to use both 2" and 1.25" format eyepieces and accessories.
