  • Celestron X-Cel LX 9mm Eyepiece - 1.25"

The Celestron X-Cel LX 9mm Eyepiece delivers high-magnification views through a 6-element optical system with a 60° apparent field of view. Its 16mm of eye relief provides comfort for all observers, and its parfocal design means you can switch between other X-Cel LX eyepieces with little to no refocusing. The 1.25" barrel is threaded for standard filters, and the entire eyepiece weighs just 6 oz.

    6-Element, 60° Optics for High-Contrast Views

The X-Cel LX 9mm uses a 6-element Erfle design to produce a wide 60° apparent field of view, ideal for detailed observations of the Moon, planets, and compact deep-sky objects. Every air-to-glass surface is fully multi-coated to maximize light transmission, and the lens edges are blackened to reduce internal reflections. This results in bright, sharp images with excellent contrast, allowing you to resolve fine crater details on the Moon or split close double stars.

A Practical 16mm of Eye Relief for All Observers

With a comfortable 16mm of eye relief, the X-Cel LX 9mm allows you to see the entire field of view without pressing your eye against the lens, a critical feature for eyeglass wearers. The pop-up rubber eyeguard extends with a simple twist, blocking stray light for non-eyeglass wearers and retracting to a flat surface for those who observe with glasses on. The black-anodized aluminum body features a threaded rubber grip for secure handling, even with gloves.

    Parfocal Design: Effortless Magnification Changes

All eyepieces in the Celestron X-Cel LX series are parfocal, including this 9mm model. This means that when you switch from another X-Cel LX eyepiece, the focal point remains nearly identical, requiring minimal or no adjustment of your telescope's focuser. This saves valuable time during observing sessions, letting you quickly compare different magnifications of the same object without losing focus.

  • What objects are best suited for the Celestron X-Cel LX 9mm eyepiece?

The 9mm focal length provides high magnification, making the X-Cel LX 9mm ideal for observing fine details on the Moon's surface, resolving the cloud bands of Jupiter, viewing the rings of Saturn, and splitting close binary stars like Albireo (Beta Cygni). It's also excellent for bringing out detail in smaller, brighter planetary nebulae like the Ring Nebula (M57).

How does the X-Cel LX 9mm perform in an 8" f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope?

In a typical 8" (203mm) f/10 SCT with a 2032mm focal length, the X-Cel LX 9mm eyepiece will yield a magnification of approximately 226x. This is an excellent power for detailed planetary viewing on nights of steady seeing, providing a sharp and well-contrasted image.

Is the 16mm eye relief of the X-Cel LX 9mm sufficient for eyeglass wearers?

Yes, 16mm of eye relief is generally considered very comfortable for most eyeglass wearers. You should be able to see the entire 60° field of view with your glasses on, especially with the pop-up eyeguard retracted to its lowest position.

What does it mean that the Celestron X-Cel LX eyepieces are "parfocal"?

Being parfocal means that all eyepieces in the X-Cel LX series share a common focal plane. When you swap between different focal lengths in the series (e.g., from a 25mm to this 9mm), the image will remain in focus, requiring little to no adjustment. This makes changing magnifications quick and easy.

Can I use filters with the Celestron X-Cel LX 9mm eyepiece?

Yes. The 1.25" barrel of the X-Cel LX 9mm is threaded to accept standard 1.25" astronomy filters, such as moon filters, color filters for planetary observing, or light pollution reduction filters.

What is the advantage of the 6-element design in the X-Cel LX 9mm?

The 6-element optical design allows for a wide 60° apparent field of view while controlling for optical aberrations like chromatic aberration and field curvature. This results in sharper images across the entire field compared to simpler 3- or 4-element designs at this focal length.
