David Astro Cheshire - Long Style
- 1.25" barrel
- Long style for secondary mirror placement
- Passive tool, no batteries
- For Newtonian reflectors
The David Astro Cheshire - Long Style is a collimation eyepiece for Newtonian reflectors with a 1.25" barrel. It uses a peep hole and an angled reflective face lit by ambient light, so you can align your mirrors by eye.
A Cheshire needs no power and has no laser to align. Light falling on its angled face is reflected down the tube, letting you see the primary mirror's centre mark against the Cheshire and judge alignment by eye.
The long style adds a longer sight tube, which gives a tighter view of the secondary mirror and makes it easier to judge whether it is centred under the focuser, the first step of Newtonian collimation.
Collimating a Newtonian reflector: centring the secondary mirror under the focuser and aligning the primary mirror.
No. A Cheshire is a passive tool lit by ambient light.
It has a 1.25" barrel, so it fits 1.25" focusers, and 2" focusers with a 2" to 1.25" adapter.
Insert the Cheshire in the focuser and look through the peep hole. Centre the secondary mirror under the focuser, then adjust the primary mirror screws until the reflection of the primary's centre mark sits centred on the Cheshire's reflective face.
Both align the primary mirror. The long style's longer sight tube also helps with secondary mirror placement; the short style is more compact.
