  • Daystar Calcium Quark Solar Filter

The Daystar Calcium Quark Solar Filter is an all-in-one eyepiece-style filter that brings the Sun's upper chromosphere into view at the 3968.5Å wavelength. Designed for refractors with focal ratios of F/7 or longer, this unit integrates a Fabry-Perot etalon with an approximate 5Å bandpass and a 25mm blocking filter into a single 1.25" device. It operates on standard 5V, 1.5A USB power, making it simple to deploy for detailed views of solar plage and supergranulation.

Calcium H-Line Views at 3968.5Å: Seeing the Upper Chromosphere

Daystar specifically chose the Calcium H-line (3968.5Å) for this Quark to maximize visual accessibility. While the nearby K-line provides similar scientific data for imagers, its shorter wavelength is invisible to many experienced observers. The H-line offers the same high-contrast views of the upper chromosphere but at a wavelength most people can see, revealing bright plage surrounding sunspots and the intricate network of supergranulation cells across the solar disk.

    • Optimized for Visual Use: The Calcium H-line wavelength is more easily perceived by the human eye than the shorter K-line, opening up this dynamic solar layer to more observers.
    • ~5Å Bandpass: The approximate 5Å Full-Width Half-Maximum (FWHM) bandpass is ideal for highlighting the high-contrast structures in the upper chromosphere without being overly restrictive.
    • Enhanced Coatings: Anti-reflective coatings are optimized for the 397nm wavelength, and internal baffles are added to maximize contrast and reveal subtle solar details.

    All-in-One Design for F/7-F/30 Refractors

The Quark's integrated design simplifies what was once a complex and expensive setup. By combining the etalon, adapters, and a 25mm blocking filter into a single eyepiece-sized housing, it eliminates compatibility issues and reduces weight. This system is engineered to perform best with refractors in the F/7 to F/30 focal ratio range, dropping directly into your 1.25" diagonal for immediate use.

    • Telescope Compatibility: Optimized for refractors F/7 and longer. For shorter focal ratio refractors, a 2x or 2.5x Tele Vue Powermate is required to bring the scope into the Quark's optimal performance range.
    • Integrated Safety: The unit contains a 25mm blocking filter with a 21mm clear aperture. For maximum safety, Daystar recommends the use of a front-mounted UV/IR cut filter on your telescope.
    • ERF Note: The Calcium Quark is not compatible with red or yellow glass Energy Rejection Filters (ERFs). A UV/IR cut filter is the correct accessory.

    USB-Powered for All-Day Sessions: 5V, 1.5A Operation

This filter's heating system, which is crucial for tuning the etalon to the precise 3968.5Å wavelength, runs on a standard 5V, 1.5A USB power source. This low power consumption allows you to run the Quark all day from the included universal AC wall adapter or a small, optional palm-sized USB battery pack for ultimate portability in the field. The 1.25" barrel features a brass compression ring to securely hold your eyepiece without marring its surface.

    • Universal Power: The included 90-240VAC adapter comes with international plugs, ensuring you can power the Quark anywhere.
    • Field-Ready: Its ability to run off a common USB power bank frees you from needing AC power at your observing site.
    • Secure Storage: Every Calcium Quark ships in a durable, dust-free Twist-Case to protect the precision optics during transport and storage.
  • Why does the Daystar Quark use Calcium H-line instead of K-line?

Daystar chose the Calcium H-line (3968.5Å) because it is more easily visible to a wider range of observers, particularly those with more life-long observing experience. The shorter wavelength of the K-line can be difficult or impossible for some people to see. The H-line provides virtually identical high-contrast views of chromospheric features like plage and supergranulation, ensuring more people can enjoy the view.

Will my fast f/5 refractor work with the Daystar Calcium Quark?

Not directly. The Calcium Quark is optimized for telescopes with a focal ratio of F/7 to F/30. To use it with a faster telescope like an f/5 refractor, you must use a Barlow-type lens to slow the light cone. Daystar recommends a 2x or 2.5x Tele Vue Powermate placed before the Quark to achieve the best performance.

How do I power the Daystar Calcium Quark in the field?

The Calcium Quark runs on standard USB power (5V, 1.5A). While it includes a 90-240VAC wall adapter for home use, its low power draw makes it ideal for field use with a portable USB battery pack. An optional 8-hour battery pack is available, but any standard power bank that meets the 5V, 1.5A requirement will work.

Do I need any other filters with the Calcium Quark?

Yes. For safety, Daystar strongly recommends using a front-mounted UV/IR cut filter on your telescope's objective. This prevents excess heat from entering your telescope and the Quark. It is critical to note that the Calcium Quark is NOT compatible with red or yellow glass Energy Rejection Filters (ERFs).

What solar features can I see with the Calcium Quark on a 100mm f/9 refractor?

A 100mm f/9 refractor is an excellent match for the Calcium Quark. You can expect to see detailed views of the Sun's upper chromosphere, which appears very different from Hydrogen-alpha. Key features visible in Calcium H-line include:

    • Plage: Bright, active regions that often surround sunspot groups.
    • Supergranulation: A network of large-scale convection cells that cover the entire solar disk.
    • Sunspots: The umbra and penumbra of sunspots are visible, often with surrounding bright plage.
    • Flares: Very bright, eruptive events can sometimes be witnessed in this wavelength.

Does the Calcium Quark include a built-in Barlow lens?

No, the Daystar Calcium Quark does not contain any Barlow or focusing elements. It is a dedicated filtering device. You will use your own eyepieces for magnification and your telescope's focuser to achieve a sharp image.
