  • Daystar Combo QUARK 4.3X Telecentric Barlow

The Daystar Combo QUARK 4.3X Telecentric Barlow is a custom-engineered optical amplifier designed to optimize Daystar's H-alpha filters for refractors from F/5 to F/9. By establishing a truly telecentric light path at a 4.3X magnification, it narrows the filter's effective bandpass to achieve maximum surface contrast, making it ideal for full-disk solar views in telescopes with focal lengths of approximately 480mm or shorter.

A 4.3X Telecentric Design for Optimal Quark Bandpass

A Hydrogen-alpha etalon performs best when fed with parallel light rays. This 4.3X barlow is a fully baffled, telecentric design engineered specifically for the Combo Quark, ensuring the light cone entering the filter is properly conditioned for the highest uniformity and contrast. Installation is direct: simply unscrew the silver snout from your Combo Quark and thread the 4.3X barlow in its place to transform your optical train.

The 480mm Full-Disk Limit: Trading Field for Surface Contrast

This amplifier prioritizes solar surface detail above all else. The aggressive 4.3X magnification results in a narrower filter bandpass, which significantly enhances the visibility of fine structures like plage and filaments against the chromosphere. The trade-off for this heightened contrast is a dimmer image and a more restricted field of view, limiting full-disk captures to telescopes with focal lengths of around 480mm or less.

Daystar 4.3X vs. 2.8X Barlow: Choosing Your Imaging Strategy

Daystar offers two telecentric options for the Combo Quark, each suited to different imaging goals. Your choice depends on your telescope's focal length and whether your priority is surface detail or prominence brightness.

    • 2.8X Telecentric Barlow: This is the preferred choice for a brighter image and for achieving full-disk views on longer focal length refractors. Its less aggressive amplification is better suited for capturing fainter prominence details.
    • 4.3X Telecentric Barlow: Select this model for maximum surface contrast with short focal length refractors (under 480mm). If your goal is to resolve the finest, high-contrast details within the solar disk itself, the 4.3X provides the narrowest bandpass.
  • How do I install the Daystar Combo QUARK 4.3X Barlow?

Installation is straightforward. You simply unscrew the standard silver snout from the front of your Daystar Combo Quark H-alpha filter and then screw the 4.3X Telecentric Barlow on in its place. No other adapters are needed.

When should I choose the Daystar Combo QUARK 4.3X Barlow instead of the 2.8X version?

Choose the 4.3X Barlow when your primary goal is achieving the highest possible surface contrast on the Sun's disk, and you are using a short focal length refractor (around 480mm or less). The 2.8X version is better for brighter images, capturing faint prominences, and for use with longer focal length telescopes.

Can I get a full-disk view of the Sun with the Daystar 4.3X Barlow and my 700mm focal length refractor?

No, it is unlikely. The Daystar 4.3X Barlow is designed to provide a full-disk view on telescopes with a focal length of approximately 480mm or shorter. On a 700mm telescope, this barlow would provide a high-magnification view of a smaller region of the solar surface, not the entire disk.

What does "telecentric" mean for my Daystar QUARK filter?

A telecentric optical system produces parallel rays of light. Daystar's QUARK H-alpha filters require this parallel light to perform optimally, achieving a consistent and narrow filter bandpass across the entire field of view. Using a telecentric barlow like the 4.3X ensures your telescope's converging light cone is properly conditioned before it reaches the filter's sensitive etalon.

Is the Daystar 4.3X Barlow good for imaging solar prominences with my F/8 refractor?

While you can image prominences, the 4.3X Barlow is optimized for high-contrast surface detail, which comes at the expense of image brightness. Since prominences are much fainter than the solar disk, the 2.8X Barlow is generally the better choice for capturing them, as it provides a brighter image. The 4.3X excels at revealing texture in filaments and plage on the disk itself.

Will the Daystar Combo QUARK 4.3X Barlow make my solar image dimmer?

Yes. Compared to the 2.8X telecentric barlow, the 4.3X version will produce a dimmer image. This is a direct trade-off for achieving a narrower filter bandpass, which is what enhances the visible contrast of surface features on the Sun.
