  • Daystar Imaging 0.5x/0.33X Focal Reducer - 2" to T-2(M)

The Daystar Imaging 0.5x/0.33X Focal Reducer adapts 2" focusers to T-mount cameras, providing two distinct reduction factors to frame the full solar disk with your Daystar filter system. Natively, it delivers a 0.5x reduction, and with the included 20mm T-extension tube, it achieves a powerful 0.33x reduction for smaller sensors or longer focal length solar scopes.

Dual Reduction Ratios: 0.5x and 0.33x for Framing Flexibility

This reducer's primary function is to shorten your telescope's effective focal length, widening the field of view to fit the entire sun onto your camera sensor. By connecting your T-mount camera directly to the reducer, you get a 0.5x reduction. For an even wider field, inserting the included 20mm T-threaded extension tube between the reducer and your camera increases the reduction to 0.33x, which is ideal for long focal length instruments.

    • 0.5x Native Reduction: Achieved by threading a T-ring or camera directly to the reducer body.
    • 0.33x Extended Reduction: Achieved by adding the included 20mm extension tube into the optical path.
    • Optional 0.38x Configuration: For an interference-free setup, the reducer can be combined with Daystar's T-thread Interference Eliminator (sold separately) to produce a 0.38x reduction.

Full-Disk Solar Imaging: Optimized for Daystar Filters and 2/3" Sensors

Daystar designed this reducer specifically to enable full-disk solar imaging with popular setups like their SR127 telescope paired with 2/3" monochrome CCDs. It is a critical component for imagers using sensors such as the ICX625, ICX655, IMX250, and IMX264 who need to capture the sun in a single frame.

It is important to note that the usable, unvignetted field of view is ultimately limited by the clear aperture of your solar etalon. Daystar Quantum filters, with their larger apertures, will yield a larger usable field than the more compact Quark or Ion series filters when using this reducer.

  • How do I get the 0.33x reduction with the Daystar Focal Reducer?

To achieve the 0.33x focal reduction, you must use the included 20mm T-threaded extension tube. Insert this extension between the focal reducer body and your T-mount camera. The increased spacing provides the stronger reduction effect.

What is the benefit of the 0.5x vs. the 0.33x reduction on the Daystar Reducer?

The two options give you framing flexibility. The 0.5x reduction is ideal for telescopes with shorter focal lengths or cameras with larger sensors where only a moderate field of view increase is needed. The more aggressive 0.33x reduction is designed for longer focal length telescopes or smaller sensor cameras, ensuring the full solar disk fits within the frame.

Can I image the full solar disk with the Daystar Reducer using a Daystar SR127 telescope?

Yes, that is a primary design goal for this reducer. The Daystar Imaging Focal Reducer is specified to allow full disk imaging with the Daystar SR127 telescope when paired with a 2/3" format monochrome CCD camera. You will likely need to use the 0.33x configuration (with the extension tube) to achieve this.

The description for the Daystar Reducer mentions an interference-free 0.38X effect. How is that achieved?

This 0.38x reduction is achieved by using the Daystar Reducer in combination with the T-thread Interference Eliminator, which is sold separately. This accessory helps manage light path reflections and interference patterns while providing a reduction factor that sits between the two standard configurations.

Will the Daystar 0.5x/0.33x Reducer work with my Daystar Quark filter?

Yes, it is designed to work with all Daystar filter systems, including the Quark, Ion, and Quantum series. However, be aware that the usable field of view is limited by the filter's etalon. A Quark or Ion filter will show more vignetting (darkening at the edges) compared to a larger Quantum filter when using this reducer.

What connections does the Daystar Imaging Focal Reducer have?

The reducer has a 2" barrel on the telescope side, which inserts into any standard 2" focuser or diagonal. On the camera side, it has standard male T-threads (M42x0.75) for direct connection to a camera-specific T-ring or a T-threaded imaging camera.
