What kind of mount do I need for the Daystar Sol 100?
With a total weight of 3.6 kg (8 lb), the Daystar Sol 100 works well on a variety of mounts. A sturdy alt-azimuth mount with slow-motion controls is an excellent choice for comfortable visual observing. For imaging, a German equatorial mount will provide the tracking needed for longer captures or mosaic work. The telescope includes a Vixen-style dovetail for easy attachment.
Is the Daystar Sol 100 Chromosphere model good for viewing prominences?
Yes. While the Chromosphere model's 0.5Å or narrower bandpass is optimized for high-contrast surface detail like filaments and active regions, it still provides excellent views of solar prominences against the black background of space. The Prominence model, with its wider bandpass, offers a brighter view of bold prominences.
How do I power the Daystar Sol 100 in the field?
The telescope requires a 5V, 1.5A USB power source. For field use, you can use a portable USB battery pack. Daystar offers an optional 8-hour battery pack specifically for this purpose. Any other USB power source must be rated for at least 2 amps at 5 volts; computer USB ports and cell phone chargers do not normally support this much power.
Can I get a full-disk image of the sun with the Daystar Sol 100 and my DSLR?
Yes, if your DSLR has an APS-C size sensor. The Daystar Sol 100's 0.75° field of view is designed to cover an APS-C sensor at its native 1690mm focal length. If you are using a camera with a smaller sensor, such as a 1-inch or 1/2-inch format astronomy camera, you will need an optional focal reducer (0.6x or 0.33x, respectively) to capture the full solar disk.
What is "wing shifting" and why would I use it on the Daystar Sol 100?
The tuning knob on the Daystar Sol 100 allows you to shift the filter's center wavelength slightly off the central 6562.8 Å H-alpha line, into the "wings" of the spectral line. This technique is used to view Doppler-shifted phenomena. Material moving toward you on the Sun is blue-shifted, and material moving away is red-shifted. By tuning into the blue or red wing, you can enhance the visibility and structure of these moving features, such as erupting prominences or active filaments.
Do I need any other filters to use the Daystar Sol 100 safely?
No additional solar filter is needed. The Daystar Sol 100 is a fully integrated, dedicated solar telescope: the etalon and the blocking filter are built into the telescope, and used as directed, these solar filters are perfectly safe for observing the Sun. Never disassemble the telescope or remove any part of the filter assembly.
Which eyepieces work best with the Daystar Sol 100?
Due to the telescope's long f/16.9 focal ratio, simpler eyepiece designs provide the best contrast. Plössl eyepieces of 25mm, 32mm or 40mm are recommended, with an eyepiece of 32mm or greater to avoid exceeding Dawes' limit. Zooms and other fast wide-field designs typically perform very badly on Daystar filters.
What is the purpose of the included "Flat Cap" for the Daystar Sol 100?
The Flat Cap is a diffuser that fits over the front of the telescope. It is used to take "flat frames" for imaging. A flat frame is an image of an evenly illuminated field, which records dust spots on the sensor and any field illumination irregularities. In image processing software, this flat frame is used to calibrate your images of the Sun, removing the dust spots and creating a smooth, even background.
Why would I choose the integrated Daystar Sol 100 over a Daystar Quark filter for my own refractor?
The Sol 100 is a clean sheet design that improves upon the value and versatility of the Quark. Its lenses were prescribed and optimized as a cohesive unit for H-alpha, the barlow is the focuser drawtube (tighter and more compact, with no wobble from components added into a drawtube), and the filter cannot be accidentally removed. Its focuser also offers the full focus range from a camera on the filter housing to a 2" diagonal and eyepiece without the super-sensitive focus of a regular focuser with a Quark.
What do the different LED colors on the Daystar Sol 100 mean?
The LED indicator shows the status of the filter's thermal control system. Yellow means the filter is warming up or adjusting to a new temperature after a tuning change; wait about 5-6 minutes. Green means the filter has stabilized at its target temperature and is on-band for observing. Red indicates a fault such as low voltage.
