Launch Imaging AssistantThe Daystar Sol 60mm Dedicated Solar Telescope is an all-in-one Hydrogen-Alpha instrument, integrating a 60mm achromatic objective with a precision-tuned internal etalon system. Its 930mm effective focal length (f/15.5) is achieved with an internal 4.3x telecentric barlow, creating the optimized light path required for high-contrast solar views. This Chromosphere model has a bandwidth of 0.5Å FWHM or narrower for surface detail (it still shows prominences), while the electronic PID-controlled tuner allows for a ±0.5Å wing shift in 0.1Å steps to study Doppler-shifted phenomena. A robust 12:1 dual-speed helical focuser ensures precise adjustments, and the entire system operates on a standard 5V, 1.5A USB power source, with a 90-240VAC adapter included.
The Sol 60 is a complete, dedicated solar telescope, not an accessory filter. The etalon, telecentric barlow, and blocking filter are all permanently integrated and aligned within the optical tube, offering safety and ease of use. This design eliminates the complexity of matching separate components.
By isolating the 6562.8 Å wavelength of Hydrogen-Alpha light, the Sol 60 reveals the Sun's dynamic chromosphere. You can observe prominences arcing off the limb, dark filaments snaking across the disk, bright plage in active regions, and the fine, grass-like structure of spicules at the solar edge. Because the chromosphere is in constant motion, the view changes in a matter of minutes, making every session a unique experience. It is important to note that granulation is a feature of the photosphere (white light) and will not be visible in H-Alpha.
The optical path begins with a 60mm air-spaced achromatic doublet objective. Light then passes through a fully baffled, 2-element 4.3x telecentric barlow that is permanently integrated into the system. This barlow extends the focal length to an effective 930mm (f/15.5), creating a slow, parallel light beam that is critical for the proper performance of the internal interference filter.
This long effective focal ratio is a deliberate design choice: the etalon is sensitive to light angle, and the telecentric barlow controls the angle of light entering it. Despite the long focal length, the telecentric optical system is designed to pass the full solar disk for visual observation, allowing you to frame the entire Sun in a single view with an appropriate low-power eyepiece.
This version of the Sol 60 is the Chromosphere model, featuring a bandpass of 0.5Å FWHM or narrower. This tight bandwidth is the key to high-contrast views of surface features like filaments, active regions, and plage. While optimized for the chromosphere, it still provides excellent views of prominences against the blackness of space. DayStar also offers a Prominence model with a wider bandpass for those who wish to prioritize the brightest possible limb detail over surface contrast.
The heart of the telescope is a heated Fabry-Perot etalon, which works in series with an integrated 13mm blocking filter. The blocking filter transmits wavelengths near H-alpha while the rest are reflected back out, and the etalon then passes a very narrow range of wavelengths. The clear exit aperture is 19mm.
DayStar's proven electronic tuning system uses a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller to heat the etalon to a precise, stable temperature, locking it onto the H-alpha wavelength. After connecting power, an LED indicator glows yellow while the system warms up, turning green in approximately 5-6 minutes to signal it is on-band and ready for observation.
A manual control knob allows for "wing shifting," adjusting the center wavelength by up to ±0.5Å in precise 0.1Å increments. This powerful feature lets you study the Doppler effect in solar phenomena. A feature moving towards you will be brighter in blue (counter-clockwise) wing shift, and one moving away will be reddened (clockwise knob tuning). After every adjustment the filter must settle in temperature for approximately 5-10 minutes before the change becomes effective. A red LED indicates a fault condition, such as insufficient power voltage.
The Sol 60 features a DayStar-manufactured 12:1 dual-speed helical rack and pinion focuser. It provides smooth, precise focusing and includes a locking brake to hold position once critical focus is achieved. The use of stainless steel reduction components ensures long-term durability and reliability.
For imagers, the focuser is designed for easy motorization. It is compatible with most third-party focus motors, offering standard shaft sizes of 6mm (coarse) and 4mm (fine). Three female M4 threaded holes are provided for mounting motor brackets, and the fine-focus reduction cone has a diameter of 34mm with the knobs removed.
For visual use, eyepiece selection is key to performance. Plössl eyepieces of 25mm, 32mm and 40mm are recommended. At long focal ratios a high-powered eyepiece can exceed Dawes' limit, so observers will find best results with an eyepiece of 32mm or greater; higher powers give a fuzzy disk that will not focus well. Fast wide-field and zoom designs typically perform very badly on Daystar filters. Eyepieces with fully multi-coated optics and blackened lens edges will deliver the best contrast by minimizing internal reflections.
For imaging, monochrome cameras offer significantly higher sensitivity and resolution for H-alpha light compared to color sensors. The Sol 60 has enough focus travel to accommodate cameras from a flush position to use with a 2" diagonal. To combat interference patterns (Newton's rings), a tilt adapter may be needed. To capture the full disk on smaller sensors, DayStar offers a range of compatible focal reducers. The included Flat Cap assists in taking calibration frames to remove dust motes and correct for field nonuniformity.
The etalon's thermal control system is essential for operation and requires a 5V, 1.5A power source via a standard micro-B USB connector. An AC wall adapter supporting 90-240VAC with interchangeable plugs for the US, UK, Europe, and Australia is included for observing from home.
For field use, the telescope can be powered by an optional 8-hour battery pack or any other portable USB power bank. It is critical that any third-party power source be rated to supply at least 2 amps at 5 volts; computer USB ports and cell phone chargers do not normally support this much power. The telescope is designed to operate in ambient temperatures from 40-100°F.
The Daystar Sol 60 is a fully integrated system designed for safe solar observation. There are no user-serviceable parts inside, and the telescope must never be disassembled. Removal of any internal component will cause a malfunction that could result in unfiltered light which can cause blindness or damage to equipment. Never look up along the telescope towards the Sun, and do not leave the telescope unattended unless remote monitoring systems are in place.
To ensure a long life for the sensitive filter components, store the telescope with its caps on in a climate-controlled environment when not in use. A few specks of dust have no effect on the image and may be gently blown off with a squeeze bulb (never compressed air cans). Daystar's preferred cleaning method for fingerprints and smudges is to return the telescope to the DayStar laboratory; otherwise, moisten a very soft, lint-free tissue, cloth or Q-tip with pure reagent-grade acetone, methanol or isopropyl alcohol (never apply solutions directly to the glass), stroke from the center outward only and use a fresh applicator for each stroke.
Weighing only 2.1 kg (4.7 lb), the Sol 60 is highly portable. It comes with mounting rings and a Vixen-style dovetail bar for mounts that accept a Vixen-style dovetail. The dovetail also includes a standard 1/4-20 tapped hole for direct attachment to a sturdy photographic tripod.
The telescope arrives ready to use in a durable hard case. Included accessories are a carry handle with an integrated solar finder, front and rear covers, a Flat Cap for imaging, the multi-plug AC adapter, and a USB power cable. Getting started is simple: mount the telescope, plug in the power supply, insert a diagonal and a low-power eyepiece (not included), and use the integrated solar finder to align with the Sun. Once the LED turns green, you are ready to focus and begin observing.
The Sol 60mm is a Hydrogen-Alpha telescope that reveals the Sun's chromosphere. You can see dynamic features like prominences erupting from the Sun's edge, dark filaments stretching across the surface, bright plage surrounding active regions, and the fine, hair-like jets known as spicules.
The Sol 60mm is a completely integrated and dedicated solar telescope. All necessary filters, including the etalon and blocking filter, are built-in and permanently aligned. Used as directed, these solar filters are perfectly safe for observing the Sun, so no additional solar filter is needed. Never disassemble the telescope or remove any part: this could result in unfiltered light which can cause blindness.
This is the Chromosphere model, which has a narrow bandwidth of 0.5Å FWHM or less. This provides higher contrast on surface details like filaments and active regions. The Prominence model has a wider bandwidth (more than 0.5Å FWHM), which makes prominences on the limb of the Sun appear brighter and bolder, at the expense of some surface contrast.
The telescope requires 5V, 1.5A USB power. For field use, you can use a portable USB battery pack. It is critical that the battery pack is rated to supply at least 2 amps at 5 volts. Computer USB ports and cell phone chargers do not normally support this much power.
The tuning knob allows you to "wing shift" off the central H-alpha line by up to ±0.5Å. This is useful for observing Doppler-shifted phenomena. For example, if you are viewing an eruptive prominence, you can tune slightly to the blue wing (counter-clockwise) to better see material moving towards you, or to the red wing (clockwise) to see material moving away.
The telescope weighs only 2.1 kg (4.7 lb) and includes a Vixen-style dovetail. It is compatible with most light- to medium-duty astronomical mounts that accept a Vixen dovetail. A stable alt-azimuth mount is often sufficient for visual observation. It also has a 1/4-20 threaded hole for use on a heavy-duty photo tripod.
Due to the long 930mm effective focal length, capturing the entire solar disk in a single frame depends on your camera's sensor size. Small sensors (1/2" and below) capture only a fraction of the solar disk at a long effective focal length, and a focal reducer between the telescope and camera gives a wider field. Daystar's focal reducers are sold separately.
This is almost always caused by "seeing," which is atmospheric turbulence caused by daytime heating of the ground and air. Observing over grass instead of pavement can help. Conditions often change throughout the day, so if the view is poor, try again later. It is not a fault of the telescope's optics.
Plössl eyepieces of 25mm, 32mm and 40mm are recommended, and an eyepiece of 32mm or greater gives the best results because a high-powered eyepiece can exceed Dawes' limit at long focal ratios. Simpler optical designs with fully multi-coated surfaces and blackened lens edges tend to provide the best contrast for solar observing.
A yellow light means the filter is heating and settling to its target temperature; it should turn green in 5-10 minutes. A red light indicates a fault such as low voltage. Ensure you are using the included AC adapter or a USB battery bank rated for at least 2A at 5V.
The telescope includes an integrated solar finder in the carry handle. Simply adjust the telescope's pointing until the bright dot of light is centered on the white target screen on the back of the handle. This provides a safe and easy way to align the telescope without looking along the tube.
