The FirstLight 100mm Mak-Cassegrain is primarily designed for high-contrast views of bright objects. You can expect to see detailed craters and mountains on the Moon, the phases of Venus, Mars' polar caps, Jupiter's main cloud belts and Galilean moons, and the rings of Saturn. It also performs well on bright deep-sky objects like globular clusters and planetary nebulae.
This telescope excels on planets. With the FirstLight 100mm Mak and good seeing conditions, you can clearly resolve Saturn's rings, including the Cassini Division, and see several of its moons. On Jupiter, you will easily see the two main equatorial belts and the four Galilean moons. Adding a higher-power eyepiece (sold separately) will bring out even more subtle cloud detail.
No, the Twilight Nano mount is extremely beginner-friendly. It is an alt-azimuth mount, meaning it moves up-down and left-right, just like a camera tripod. There is no polar alignment required. You simply attach the telescope, place it on the ground, and you are ready to start observing.
Yes. The telescope includes a standard 1.25" focuser and diagonal, making it compatible with the vast majority of astronomical eyepieces on the market. To get higher magnification for planetary viewing, you could add a 10mm or 12mm eyepiece, which would increase the magnification to 140x and 117x, respectively.
While you can certainly see the Orion Nebula (M42) with the FirstLight 100mm Mak, its long f/14 focal length provides a relatively narrow field of view. You will get a great close-up view of the Trapezium star cluster at its core, but you may not be able to fit the entire nebula and its fainter outer wings into a single field of view, even with the included 25mm eyepiece.
The smartphone adapter clamps onto the supplied 25mm Plössl eyepiece. You then place your phone in the adapter and adjust its position until the phone's camera is looking directly through the eyepiece. It's an easy way to get started with basic astrophotography, allowing you to capture images of the Moon and bright planets to share.
