What is the difference between the CEM40 versions?
Every version uses the same 40 lb (18 kg) payload mount head with integrated iPolar and GPS. The standard CEM40 tracks to < ±7.5 arcsec with PPEC, while the CEM40EC adds a high-resolution RA encoder for < 0.3 arcsec RMS. The rest of the label tells you what is packaged with it: LiteRoc (1.75" tripod) or 1.5" Tripod versions include a tripod and a 5 kg counterweight, Case versions add a hard carrying case, iGuider and NUC versions add guiding or mini-PC integration, and Head Only versions include the mount head, iPolar, controller and hard case but no tripod and no counterweight.
What do I need to buy separately with a CEM40 Head Only version?
The Head Only packages include the mount head, integrated iPolar, Go2Nova hand controller, AC adapter and hard case. To image you will need a tripod or pier (such as the iOptron LiteRoc tripod) and at least one counterweight sized to your payload; the CEM40 uses the #8027 counterweight on its Φ28mm counterweight shaft.
What is the main advantage of the iOptron CEM40's center-balanced design?
The center-balanced design places the telescope's weight directly over the center of the pier or tripod. This increases stability and gives the CEM40 a high payload-to-weight ratio of 2.28, carrying a 40 lb payload on a mount head that weighs only 17.4 lb, so it is far easier to transport and set up than a traditional GEM of similar capacity.
Can the iOptron CEM40 handle an 8" SCT for imaging the Orion Nebula (M42)?
Yes. An 8" SCT optical tube typically weighs 12-15 lbs, and with a camera, guide scope and accessories the total is usually around 20-25 lbs, well within the CEM40's 40 lb capacity. The standard CEM40's < ±7.5 arcsec tracking with autoguiding, or the CEM40EC's < 0.3 arcsec RMS encoder tracking, is more than sufficient for detailed images of M42.
Is autoguiding necessary for imaging the Andromeda Galaxy (M31)?
With the standard CEM40, plan to autoguide: a guide camera on a separate guide scope (or the iGuider version) connects to the ST-4 port, and guiding software on a laptop connected via USB keeps stars pinpoint. With the CEM40EC, many wide-field setups (typically under 600mm focal length) produce round stars in multi-minute unguided exposures thanks to its < 0.3 arcsec RMS tracking; guiding still helps with longer focal lengths or exposures beyond 5-10 minutes by correcting atmospheric refraction and drift.
How does the iPolar on the CEM40 simplify polar alignment?
The integrated iPolar is an electronic polar scope built into every CEM40. Its sensitive camera and software plate-solve the star field around the celestial pole and show you on your computer screen how to adjust altitude and azimuth, so you reach a highly accurate alignment in just a few minutes without kneeling behind the mount, even if you cannot see Polaris.
Does the iOptron CEM40 have built-in WiFi?
No, the CEM40 does not have built-in WiFi. WiFi connectivity is available as an external, optional accessory for wireless control from a smartphone, tablet or computer. Out of the box, the mount connects to a computer through its USB port.
