Massive Φ110mm, 216-tooth zero-backlash worm wheels and a precision stepper motor drive deliver a native periodic error of less than ±7.5 arcseconds, while the encoder-equipped GEM45EC tightens that to less than 0.3 arcseconds RMS. Every version includes the internal iPolar electronic polar scope and a Go2Nova controller with a 212,000+ object database. The GEM45 is offered in several versions: complete packages with the 1.75" LiteRoc tripod and counterweight (with options for a hard case, iGuider or a NUC-ready saddle), and head-only versions in a hard case for imagers who already own a tripod or pier.

    The GEM45 achieves its 2.53 payload-to-weight ratio through an all-metal, CNC-machined structure and oversized core components. Both the Right Ascension and Declination axes are built around solid Φ45mm steel shafts and large Φ68mm bearings, providing the rigidity to carry heavy instrument packages without sacrificing stability. The 17.5 lb mount head is easy to transport to dark-sky sites, yet it supports imaging systems up to 45 lbs, from long refractors to 8" and 9.25" SCT or R-C setups with cameras and guide scopes.

    <±7.5 arcsec PE Standard, <0.3 arcsec RMS with the EC Encoder

    At the heart of the GEM45's tracking system are two Φ110mm, 216-tooth brass worm wheels engineered for zero backlash. Driven through a synchronous belt by a 1.8° stepper motor with 128 micro-steps, the system achieves a resolution of 0.08 arcseconds. On the standard GEM45, this drivetrain delivers a native periodic error of less than ±7.5 arcseconds, which can be further reduced with Permanent Periodic Error Correction (PPEC) for smooth, tightly guided long exposures.

    GEM45EC versions add a high-resolution encoder and Real-time PEC (RPEC) that correct worm gear error as it happens, for a native tracking accuracy of less than 0.3 arcseconds RMS. This level of precision can eliminate the need for autoguiding on short-to-medium exposures, even with long focal length telescopes, and makes guiding smoother when you do use it.

    Go2Nova Controller with a 212,000+ Object Database

    Navigating the night sky is managed by the Go2Nova® 8407+ hand controller, which contains a database of over 212,000 celestial objects on an 8-line LCD. Once aligned, the mount can slew to any target at up to 4.5° per second. An integrated GPS automatically inputs the correct time and location, and the ST-4 guiding port and USB communication port provide standard connectivity for autoguiding and computer control.

    • iOptron CEM40 Advantage: The center-balanced design places the telescope's center of gravity directly over the tripod, increasing stability for its weight. It also allows operation at very low latitudes without the counterweight shaft colliding with a tripod leg.

A tripod and counterweight are not included. To complete your setup, add a sturdy tripod or pier such as the iOptron LiteRoc 1.75" and at least one counterweight sized to balance your telescope, plus a 12V DC battery pack if you image away from mains power.

    What is the practical imaging payload for the iOptron GEM45?

    While the iOptron GEM45 has a maximum payload of 45 lbs, a common rule of thumb for long-exposure astrophotography is to stay between 50-60% of the maximum capacity. This suggests a comfortable imaging payload of around 22-27 lbs, which is ample for most refractor and 8"-9.25" SCT or R-C setups with cameras and guide scopes.

    How does the internal iPolar on the GEM45 simplify polar alignment?

    The iPolar is an integrated electronic polar scope that looks through the right ascension axis.     Yes, absolutely. A typical 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope (SCT) with a camera, guide scope, and other accessories weighs between 20-25 lbs, well within the 45 lb payload capacity of the GEM45. The standard mount's <±7.5 arcsecond tracking with PPEC, or the EC versions' <0.3 arcsecond RMS tracking, provides a stable platform for detailed long exposures of targets like M42.

    Do I need to autoguide the GEM45EC when imaging the Andromeda Galaxy (M31)?

    Thanks to its <0.3 arcsecond RMS tracking accuracy, the GEM45EC allows excellent unguided exposures of several minutes, depending on your focal length and polar alignment accuracy. For capturing the faint outer arms of M31 with very long exposures (5-10 minutes or more), autoguiding is still recommended to correct for atmospheric refraction and residual drift, but guiding will be much smoother and require fewer corrections.

    Does the GEM45 NUC-Ready version include a computer?

    No. The GEM45 NUC-Ready and GEM45EC NUC-Ready versions are designed to carry an Intel NUC mini computer at the front of the dovetail saddle, with dedicated NUC power, LAN and USB connections routed through the mount's cable management system. The NUC computer is not included and must be purchased separately. Both NUC-Ready versions include the LiteRoc tripod, counterweight and hard case.
