    The Optec Alnitak Flat-Man L provides a uniform, 330 mm electroluminescent light source for creating high-quality flat fields with telescopes up to 315 mm in aperture. Its lamp diffuser has a full diameter of 355 mm, fitting over dew shields up to 356 mm, and it weighs 1.6 kg. Brightness is set in 256 levels with Optec's Alnitak software, ASCOM and Alpaca drivers.

    330mm Illumination for Telescopes up to 315mm

    The Flat-Man L is engineered to fully illuminate optical systems up to 315 mm (12.5 inches). The panel produces a 330 mm circle of even light, for flat field frames. The maximum OTA or dew shield outer diameter is 356 mm (14 inches).

    256-Level Brightness Control via ASCOM and Alpaca

    Achieving the correct exposure for flat fields with different filters and camera settings requires precise brightness control. The Flat-Man L offers 256 discrete brightness steps (0 to 255), adjustable via the included Alnitak Control software for Windows. For automated observatory setups, the native ASCOM and Alpaca drivers allow your imaging sequence software to set the lamp brightness automatically, without manual intervention. The lamp takes 12 VDC for illumination and 5 VDC for control from the USB connection; the power supply and USB cable are included.

    The Flat-Man L is designed for telescopes with an aperture up to 315 mm (12.5 inches). It provides a 330 mm illuminated surface and fits over telescope tubes or dew shields with a maximum outer diameter of 356 mm (14 inches).

    Will the Alnitak Flat-Man L work with my 11" SCT and its dew shield?

    Yes. An 11" (279mm) SCT is well within the Flat-Man L's recommended maximum aperture of 315 mm. As long as the outer diameter of your dew shield is no more than 356 mm (14 inches), the panel will fit directly over the front for taking flats.

    How do I control the brightness of the Optec Flat-Man L?

    Brightness is controlled digitally via a USB connection to a computer. You can use the included Alnitak Control software for manual adjustments across 256 levels. For automation, the included ASCOM and Alpaca drivers allow ASCOM- or Alpaca-compatible imaging software to set the brightness automatically as part of a sequence.

    What power sources does the Alnitak Flat-Man L require?

    The Flat-Man L requires two power sources: a 12 VDC input for the electroluminescent lamp itself and a 5 VDC input for control, which is supplied by the USB connection to your computer. A compatible power supply and USB cable are included.

    How can I mount the Optec Flat-Man L in my observatory?

    The panel has #6-32 threaded holes that can be used for mounting. For a more straightforward approach, the optional #19091 Flat-Man L Tripod Mounting Bracket (sold separately) allows you to attach the panel to a tripod, in the field or in the observatory.
