  • SBIG AO-X Adaptive Optics

The SBIG AO-X Adaptive Optics unit delivers real-time seeing corrections for large-format imaging systems, adding only 26.7 mm of optical length to your imaging train. Engineered to support light paths up to 90 mm (3.5 inches), the AO-X is designed for sharper stars with SBIG's large-format sensors, such as the AC4040. This system requires an SBIG StarChaser SC-4 off-axis guider, to which it bolts directly, and corrects image motion at rates up to 10 Hz, much faster than a telescope mount can respond.

Rapid Tip/Tilt Correction for Sharper Stars

Unlike a telescope mount, which can only correct for slow tracking errors, the AO-X makes sub-second adjustments to counteract atmospheric turbulence. It uses a voice-coil-driven gimbal to tip and tilt a plane-parallel BK-7 glass optical window, precisely re-centering the guide star on the sensor at a high frequency. Diffraction Limited's test data show significant improvement in the FWHM of star profiles, and improved resolution under the right conditions.

26.7mm Backfocus and StarChaser SC-4 Guiding

The AO-X is designed for seamless integration into SBIG imaging systems, consuming a minimal 26.7 mm of optical backfocus. Its large aperture accommodates light paths up to 90 mm. Integration requires the SBIG StarChaser SC-4 off-axis guide camera, which must be placed behind the AO-X unit. The AO-X bolts directly to the front of the SC-4.

    • Minimal Backfocus: The slim 26.7 mm profile preserves precious backfocus for filter wheels and other accessories.
    • Direct Mounting: The AO-X bolts directly to the front of the SC-4 using the SBIG large-format bolt pattern.
    • Large Clear Aperture: The 90 mm light path suits large-format cameras on telescopes from 0.3 m to over 1 m, the range DL designs the AO-X for.

Designed for SBIG Aluma, STX, and STXL Cameras

The SBIG AO-X is compatible with a wide range of current and legacy large-format SBIG cameras. It works with the current Aluma AC series and also with older STX and STXL cameras. For connection to various telescopes, optional adapters are available for 3-inch threaded focusers and 2-inch or 3-inch nosepieces.

    Compatible Camera Series:

    • Aluma AC Series: AC4040, AC2020, AC455, AC-4040BSI, and AC-2020BSI (with StarChaser SC-4).
    • STX Series: STX-16803, guided by a StarChaser SC-4, the STX Guider, the built-in guide sensor on some STX cameras, or a Remote Guide Head with an off-axis guider.
    • STXL Series: STXL-16200, STXL-11000, and STXL-6303 with self-guiding filter wheels or external guiders.
  • What is the main benefit of using the SBIG AO-X over mount guiding alone?

A telescope mount can correct for slow drift and periodic error, at no more than about once per second. The SBIG AO-X makes corrections at a much higher frequency, allowing it to compensate for rapid atmospheric seeing (twinkling). This can give significantly tighter, rounder stars and higher resolution than mount-only guiding, under the right conditions.

Which guide camera do I need for the SBIG AO-X?

For modern SBIG cameras like the Aluma series, the SBIG StarChaser SC-4 off-axis guide camera is required. The AO-X is designed to bolt directly to the SC-4. Older STX or STXL cameras may use their integrated guiders, self-guiding filter wheels, or a Remote Guide Head placed behind the AO-X.

How much backfocus does the SBIG AO-X use?

The SBIG AO-X consumes 26.7 mm of optical length, also known as backfocus. You must ensure your imaging train has enough available backfocus to accommodate the AO-X, your filter wheel, the SC-4 guider, and your camera.

Will the SBIG AO-X work with my Aluma AC4040 camera?

Yes, the AO-X is fully compatible with the SBIG Aluma AC4040. This configuration requires the use of a StarChaser SC-4 off-axis guider, which sits between the AO-X and the camera.

Can I use the SBIG AO-X to improve images of planetary nebulae like the Ring Nebula (M57) with my 14-inch SCT?

It can help. A 14-inch telescope is within the 0.3 m to over 1 m range the AO-X is designed for. By correcting image motion at up to 10 Hz, the SBIG AO-X can tighten star images and improve resolution under the right conditions, which benefits small, detailed targets like the Ring Nebula (M57).

My telescope has a 3-inch threaded focuser. How do I connect the SBIG AO-X?

To connect the SBIG AO-X to a standard 3-inch threaded focuser, you will need the optional 10018 adapter, which provides a 3-inch x 24 tpi thread on the telescope side of the unit. Other optional adapters are available for 2-inch and 3-inch slip-fit nosepieces.
