  • Shelyak Spox Module

The Shelyak Spox Module provides dedicated remote control over the internal calibration lamps for Alpy 600, LISA, and LHIRES III spectrographs, streamlining the critical process of data acquisition. This controller simplifies taking flat-field and spectral calibration frames, with optional 0.8m and 5m cables available to integrate the module cleanly into your specific setup.

Remote Calibration Control for Alpy 600, LISA, and LHIRES III

The Spox Module manages your spectrograph's two essential calibration sources: the internal tungsten lamp for flat-field frames and the Neon/Argon lamp for wavelength calibration. By centralizing this control, you eliminate the need to manually access the spectrograph, reducing the risk of disturbing your setup between science exposures and calibration sequences. A diagnostic red LED on the unit provides immediate visual feedback if one of the lamps is faulty.

Manual and ASCOM Control for Field or Observatory Use

Engineered for two distinct operational scenarios, the Spox Module adapts to your workflow. For quick, computer-free operation in the field, tactile push-buttons on the housing allow you to toggle each lamp directly. For automated or remote observatory use, a USB connection enables full computer control via dedicated software (for Windows or Linux) or integration into sequencing applications using its ASCOM driver.

Flexible Cabling with 0.8m and 5m Options

The Spox connects to your spectrograph via a specific cable, available separately in 0.8m or 5m lengths to suit your configuration. The shorter 0.8m cable is ideal for mounting the Spox directly on the telescope assembly, while the 5m cable allows you to place the controller on a pier or other nearby location. Please note that the Spox Module requires a 12V power supply, which is not included.

  • What does the Spox Module control on my Shelyak spectrograph?

The Spox Module remotely controls the power to your spectrograph's internal calibration lamps. This includes the tungsten lamp used for acquiring flat-field images and the Neon/Argon lamp used for wavelength calibration.

How do I power the Spox Module?

You will need to provide your own 12V DC power supply. The Spox Module does not draw power over USB and the power supply is not included with the unit.

Can I use the Spox Module without a computer?

Yes. The Spox Module has physical push-buttons on the case that allow you to turn the flat and calibration lamps on and off manually. This is ideal for use in the field when you don't want to connect to a laptop.

What software do I need to control the Spox Module from my PC?

You have two options for computer control via USB. You can use Shelyak's dedicated application, available for both Windows and Linux, or you can use the provided ASCOM driver to integrate the Spox Module into popular automation and sequencing software.

I have a LHIRES III on a permanent pier and want to control it from my warm room. Is the Spox Module suitable?

Absolutely. This is a perfect use case for the Spox Module. By connecting it to your LHIRES III with the optional 5m cable and to your observatory computer via USB, you can fully automate your calibration frames as part of your imaging sequence without ever having to go outside.

I'm using an Alpy 600 in the field for a variable star project. How does the Spox Module help?

For field work, the Spox Module's manual push-button control is its key advantage. After your science observation of a star like Algol (Beta Persei), you can immediately trigger the calibration and flat lamps with the press of a button, ensuring you capture essential calibration data with your Alpy 600 without needing to boot up a computer.
