This module offers three times the line count of the standard 600 l/mm grating included with the UVEX, delivering the highest possible spectral dispersion and resolution available for the instrument.
This grating is a specialized tool designed for maximum detail. The high 1800 l/mm density spreads starlight across a greater number of pixels, allowing you to resolve extremely fine spectral features that are invisible with lower-dispersion gratings. It is the ideal choice for advanced projects like measuring the Doppler shift in binary star systems, analyzing the detailed atmospheric lines of bright stars, or separating close emission lines in planetary nebulae.
The trade-off for this high resolution is a reduction in brightness and a narrower spectral range captured in a single exposure. This makes the 1800 l/mm grating best suited for brighter targets where photon signal is abundant and fine detail is the primary scientific goal.

The primary advantage is its high spectral resolution. With 1800 lines per millimeter, it spreads light out more than any other UVEX grating, allowing you to resolve very fine, closely spaced details in a spectrum that would be blurred together at lower dispersions.
For a bright A-type star like Vega, the 1800 l/mm grating would be excellent for studying the detailed profile of its prominent hydrogen absorption lines (the Balmer series). The high resolution would allow you to detect subtle asymmetries or Doppler shifts caused by stellar rotation or other atmospheric phenomena.
Yes. Because the light is spread out more, the resulting spectrum is dimmer and covers a narrower wavelength range in a single image. This means it requires longer exposure times or brighter targets and may require taking multiple images to cover the same spectral range as the 600 l/mm grating.

It is not recommended. The high dispersion of the 1800 l/mm grating would spread the very faint light from M51 too thinly, resulting in an unusable spectrum with a very low signal-to-noise ratio. A low-dispersion grating, like the standard 600 l/mm or optional 150 l/mm, is required for such faint, extended objects.
