  • Sky-Watcher AZ-GTi Mount

The Sky-Watcher AZ-GTi packs an 11 lb payload capacity into a mount head weighing just 2.6 lbs, all controlled wirelessly via WiFi. Its dual-encoder Freedom Find™ system allows for manual slewing without losing alignment, and the entire 10.5 lb package includes a tripod that extends up to 59.8" for comfortable viewing.

11 lb Capacity in a 2.6 lb Head

The core of the AZ-GTi is its impressive strength-to-weight ratio. The mount head supports up to 11 lbs of equipment, from a compact Maksutov-Cassegrain for planetary viewing to a DSLR with a telephoto lens for timelapse photography. At only 2.6 lbs, the head is exceptionally portable, making it an ideal solution for travel and quick setup.

Wireless GoTo via SynScan Pro App

The AZ-GTi eliminates the need for a cabled hand controller by generating its own WiFi network. You connect your smartphone or tablet directly to the mount and use the SynScan Pro app for full GoTo control. The app-based object database provides a modern, intuitive interface for aligning the mount and locating celestial objects.

    • Built-in WiFi: No external dongles or accessories are needed to connect and control the mount.
    • App-Based Control: Access a comprehensive celestial database and alignment routines directly from your iOS or Android device.
    • DSLR Interface: An auxiliary shutter release port allows the mount to trigger your DSLR for automated timelapse sequences, firing continuous 60-second exposures.

    Freedom Find™ Dual-Encoder System

Sky-Watcher's Freedom Find™ technology uses dual encoders on each axis, allowing you to disengage the clutches and move the mount by hand to any position in the sky. The mount never loses its alignment or positional information. This gives you the freedom to manually locate an object quickly, then re-engage the clutches to have the mount's GoTo system take over for precise centering and tracking.

    AZ-GTi vs. Star Adventurer GTi

While both are compact, WiFi-controlled mounts from Sky-Watcher, they serve different primary purposes. The AZ-GTi is an alt-azimuth mount ideal for visual astronomy and timelapse, while the Star Adventurer GTi is an equatorial mount built for long-exposure astrophotography.

    • Star Adventurer GTi's Advantage: As a true equatorial mount, it tracks the sky with the motion of a single axis, avoiding the field rotation that limits long-exposure deep-sky imaging on an alt-az mount.
    • AZ-GTi's Advantage: Its alt-azimuth setup is faster to align and more intuitive for visual "point-and-look" observing. While it has an equatorial mode, its primary strength is grab-and-go visual astronomy, where the 11 lb payload and dual encoders offer significant flexibility.
  • What kind of telescope works best with the Sky-Watcher AZ-GTi?

The AZ-GTi is ideal for compact, lightweight telescopes under its 11 lb payload capacity. This includes small refractors (up to 80mm), Maksutov-Cassegrains (up to 127mm), and Schmidt-Cassegrains (up to 5"). It's a perfect match for "grab-and-go" setups for visual observing.

How do I power the AZ-GTi in the field?

The AZ-GTi can be powered in two ways. It has an internal battery compartment that accepts 8 AA batteries for maximum portability. For longer sessions, it has a 12V DC input jack that can be connected to an external power tank or AC adapter.

Can I use the Sky-Watcher AZ-GTi for long-exposure astrophotography of galaxies like Andromeda (M31)?

In its native alt-azimuth mode, the AZ-GTi is not suitable for long-exposure deep-sky imaging due to field rotation. While it has a firmware-supported equatorial mode (requiring a separate equatorial wedge), its primary design is for visual astronomy and short-exposure photography (lunar, planetary) or timelapse. For serious deep-sky imaging, a dedicated equatorial mount like the Star Adventurer GTi is recommended.

How does the Freedom Find™ dual-encoder feature on the AZ-GTi work?

Freedom Find™ means the mount has two sets of encoders. One set is part of the GoTo motor system, and the other constantly reads the mount's physical position. This allows you to loosen the clutches, move the telescope manually to a new target, and tighten them again. The mount instantly knows where it's pointing without needing to be realigned, combining the convenience of GoTo with the intuitive feel of a manual mount.

How would the Sky-Watcher AZ-GTi perform with a 102mm Maksutov for observing Jupiter?

This is an excellent combination. A 102mm Mak is well under the 11 lb payload limit, and its long focal length is perfect for planetary detail. The AZ-GTi's GoTo system would easily locate Jupiter, and its tracking would keep the planet centered in the eyepiece for extended observation of the cloud bands and Galilean moons.

Do I need an internet connection to use the AZ-GTi's WiFi?

No. The AZ-GTi generates its own local WiFi network. You connect your phone or tablet directly to the mount's network, not to the internet. This allows you to use the mount anywhere, even in remote locations with no cellular or internet service.
