  • Sky-Watcher Emerald 16mm 82° Eyepiece

The Sky-Watcher Emerald 16mm 82° Eyepiece is a medium-power wide-field eyepiece for globular clusters, galaxies, planetary nebulae and the lunar surface. Its 82° apparent field of view is more than 50% wider than the roughly 50° field of a standard Plössl, so targets sit inside a broad, immersive view and stay in the eyepiece longer on a non-tracking telescope. The 7-element, fully multi-coated optical design is housed in a precision-machined all-metal body with a 2" barrel, and the eyepiece ships with a protective travel case with strap.

    82° Field: 1.09° of Sky at 75x in a 1200mm Telescope

In a telescope with a 1200mm focal length, such as an 8-inch f/6 Dobsonian, the Emerald 16mm delivers 75x. Dividing the 82° apparent field by that magnification gives a true field of about 1.09°. That is more than twice the width of the full Moon, enough to frame most globular clusters with plenty of dark sky around them.

14mm of Eye Relief in a 2" Eyepiece

The 14mm of eye relief is comfortable for most observers. If you keep eyeglasses on at the eyepiece, the Emerald 22mm with 18mm of eye relief gives more room. At 1.2 lbs (0.54 kg) and 4.75" x 2.25" (length x width), it is a substantial 2" eyepiece, so plan to rebalance a Dobsonian or a light mount when switching from small 1.25" eyepieces.

7 Fully Multi-Coated Elements in an All-Metal Housing

Sky-Watcher positions the Emerald series as premium 82° eyepieces for amateur astronomers who want top-tier performance without the top-tier price tag. The 7-element optical design is fully multi-coated to maximize light transmission and contrast, and the precision-machined metal housing is built to withstand years of use in the field.

    • Threaded for Filters: The 2" barrel is threaded for filters, so light pollution, nebula and color filters can stay on the eyepiece.
    • Included Travel Case: The case with strap measures 6" x 4" x 3.25" and protects the eyepiece from bumps, dust and moisture on the way to a dark site.
  • Can I use the Emerald 16mm in a 1.25" focuser?

No. The Emerald 16mm has a 2" barrel, so it requires a 2" focuser or a 2" star diagonal. Telescopes limited to 1.25" eyepieces should use the Emerald 9mm, which has a 1.25" barrel.

What magnification will the Emerald 16mm give me?

Divide your telescope's focal length by 16. In a 1200mm Dobsonian it gives 75x, in a 700mm refractor such as the Evostar EDX 100 it gives 44x, and in a 2700mm Maksutov such as the Skymax 180 it gives 169x.

Can I use it while wearing eyeglasses?

The 14mm of eye relief is comfortable for most observers. If you keep eyeglasses on at the eyepiece, the Emerald 22mm with 18mm of eye relief gives more room.

    Does it accept filters?

Yes. Sky-Watcher specifies the barrel as threaded for filters, so you can attach filters sized for its 2" barrel.

How does the Emerald 16mm compare with the other Emerald eyepieces?

All three Emerald eyepieces share the 82° field, 7-element design and all-metal build. The 9mm has a 1.25" barrel and 8mm of eye relief, the 16mm has a 2" barrel and 14mm of eye relief, and the 22mm has a 2" barrel and 18mm of eye relief.
