  • Sky-Watcher Skymax 127 AZ-GTi Telescope

The Sky-Watcher Skymax 127 AZ-GTi combines a high-contrast 127 mm Maksutov-Cassegrain optical tube with the ultra-portable AZ-GTi GoTo mount. This complete system delivers a 1540 mm focal length (f/12.1) for high-magnification views of the Moon and planets, supported by a mount with an 11 lb payload capacity that you control directly from your smartphone via built-in Wi-Fi. With Freedom Find's dual-encoder system providing a resolution of approximately 20 arc-minutes, you can move the telescope manually without losing your alignment, offering a seamless blend of manual and computerized astronomy.

Skymax 127 Optics: 127mm Aperture and 1540mm Focal Length

The heart of this system is the Skymax 127, a 127 mm (5-inch) Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope. Its f/12.1 focal ratio and 1540 mm focal length are engineered for high-power observing, making it an exceptional instrument for resolving fine detail on planetary surfaces, splitting tight double stars, and exploring lunar craters. The Maksutov design is renowned for its sharp, high-contrast images, similar to a refractor but in a compact, portable tube that weighs only 9.37 lb (4.25 kg).

    • Included Eyepieces: The package includes 25 mm and 10 mm eyepieces, providing 62x and 154x magnification, respectively. These are ideal starting points for wide-field locating and high-power detailed observation.

AZ-GTi Mount: 11 lb Capacity with Wi-Fi GoTo Control

The AZ-GTi mount is a modern, lightweight GoTo platform designed for ultimate portability and ease of use. With an 11 lb payload capacity, it comfortably handles the Skymax 127 optical tube while weighing only about 3 lb (1.4 kg) itself. There is no need for a separate hand controller; the mount creates its own Wi-Fi network, allowing you to connect and control it using the free SynScan app on an iOS or Android device. An optional SynScan hand control is also available.

    • Full GoTo Functionality: Select a target in the SynScan app and the mount will automatically slew to and track it.
    • SNAP Port: An integrated SNAP port can trigger the shutter of Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Sony cameras with an optional cable.

Freedom Find: Dual Encoders with 20 Arc-Minute Resolution

With Sky-Watcher's Freedom Find technology, the mount is equipped with auxiliary encoders on both axes, which means it always knows where it's pointing, even if you move it by hand. After performing a simple star alignment, you can unlock the clutches, manually pan across the sky to a new target, and re-engage the clutches. When you want to use GoTo again, no realignment is required, only re-locking the clutches.

Grab-and-Go Design: About 18 lb (8.2 kg) and Powered by 8 AA Batteries

The entire Skymax 127 AZ-GTi system is engineered for portability. The optical tube weighs 9.37 lb (4.25 kg), and the complete mount, tripod, and pier extension assembly weighs just 8.6 lb (3.9 kg). This makes it easy to transport and set up in minutes. The ability to run on 8 standard AA batteries (or an external DC supply) means you can take it to dark-sky sites without worrying about access to AC power, making it a true "grab-and-go" telescope for spontaneous observing sessions.

    • Extension Pier: The included extension pier fits between the tripod and the mount so a long telescope tube does not hit the tripod legs when pointed high. The accessory tray keeps the tripod legs firmly expanded for stability.
    • 3/8" Socket: The mount head features a standard 3/8" socket, allowing it to be used on the included Sky-Watcher tripod or on a camera tripod.
  • How do I control the Sky-Watcher Skymax 127 AZ-GTi?

The Skymax 127 AZ-GTi is controlled wirelessly using its built-in Wi-Fi. You connect your smartphone or tablet to the mount's Wi-Fi network and use Sky-Watcher's free SynScan app (available for iOS and Android) for alignment, GoTo slewing, and tracking. An optional SynScan hand controller can also be used if you prefer a physical interface.

What is Freedom Find on the Skymax 127 AZ-GTi mount?

Freedom Find is a dual-encoder technology that allows you to manually move the telescope on both axes without losing the mount's alignment. After your initial star alignment, you can disengage the clutches, point the scope by hand to a different part of the sky, and then lock the clutches again. The mount's GoTo system will know its new position and can immediately resume accurate slewing and tracking.

Can I power the Skymax 127 AZ-GTi with a portable battery pack?

Yes. The mount runs on 8 AA batteries (not included) internally for maximum portability. For longer sessions, you can use an external power source via its DC power port. It accepts a DC 7.5-14 V, 0.75 A minimum supply with a 2.0 mm ID / 5.5 mm OD center-positive barrel plug.

Can I use the Skymax 127 AZ-GTi for astrophotography?

The Skymax 127's long 1540 mm focal length suits lunar and planetary work. For deep-sky astrophotography, the alt-azimuth mount is limited to short exposures to avoid field rotation. The built-in SNAP port can trigger the shutter of Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Sony cameras with an optional cable.
