What problem does the Starlight Instruments SIPS solve?
The SIPS corrects coma in fast Newtonian reflectors without the tuning a stand-alone Paracorr needs: the Paracorr Type 2 is fixed at the optimum distance from the primary mirror, so every eyepiece focuses normally.
Which focuser is the SIPS compatible with?
The Starlight Instruments SIPS is specifically designed to be used with a 2" Feather Touch focuser that has 1.5" of draw tube travel. It is not compatible with other focuser models or brands.
Can I use the SIPS for imaging deep-sky objects like the Orion Nebula (M42)?
Starlight presents the SIPS for eyepiece use. For cameras, its manual says the focuser may be detached from the SIPS unit and mounted directly on the base; cameras can also be used with the SIPS in place as long as they do not touch the Paracorr lens group.
Do I need to adjust the SIPS when switching from a low-power eyepiece to a high-power one for viewing Jupiter?
No. This is the primary advantage of the SIPS. The optical corrector is fixed at the optimal position. When you switch from a wide-field eyepiece to a high-power planetary eyepiece to view Jupiter, you only need to adjust the main focus knobs on your Feather Touch focuser. The corrector stays where it was set at installation.
How does the SIPS compare to a standard, adjustable Tele Vue Paracorr Type 2?
A standard Paracorr is more versatile, as it can be used in any 2" focuser. However, the SIPS is easier to use: by fixing the optics at the optimum distance, it removes the need to re-tune the corrector's position for each eyepiece.
How do I collimate my telescope with the SIPS installed?
The SIPS is designed to allow for easy collimation. The Tele Vue Paracorr Type 2 lens group can be removed from the main housing, giving you unobstructed access to your primary mirror for precise collimation adjustments. Once collimation is complete, reinstall the lens group. If collimation moved the primary mirror, reset the corrector height with the positioning aid; leave one of the three collimation adjustments untouched so this is not needed.
