  • SVBONY 1.25" 66° Ultra Wide Eyepiece

The SVBONY 6mm 1.25" 66° Ultra Wide Eyepiece delivers a dramatically larger viewing area than conventional eyepiece designs. This expanded 66° apparent field creates an immersive, wide-window effect on the sky, allowing you to frame large star clusters and nebulae completely within the standard 1.25" format.

A 66° Window on the Sky

The key feature of this eyepiece is the 66° apparent field of view. This represents a significant increase in observable sky compared to the 50-52° field of a typical Plössl eyepiece, without requiring a move to a 2" focuser. This wider perspective makes it easier to locate objects and appreciate the context of targets like the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) or the Pleiades (M45) against the background starfield.

    1.25” Body with High-Contrast Internals

The eyepiece is built into a durable aluminum 1.25" barrel that is compatible with virtually any telescope focuser. The interior of the housing is blackened to absorb stray light, preventing internal reflections from reducing image contrast. This ensures a dark background, making faint details on planets or in nebulosity more apparent. The barrel is also threaded to accept standard 1.25" astronomy filters, allowing you to easily add a moon filter or nebula filter to your setup.

SVBONY 66° UWA vs. a 52° Plössl Eyepiece

Compared to a standard 52° Plössl of the same focal length, the SVBONY 66° eyepiece offers a noticeably more expansive view. While a Plössl is a sharp, high-contrast workhorse, its narrower field can feel restrictive on large deep-sky objects.

    • Field of View: The SVBONY's 66° field feels more like looking through a porthole than a narrow tube, making observations more engaging.
    • Object Framing: The wider field allows you to fit entire open clusters like the Beehive Cluster (M44) into a single view at higher power, something a 52° Plössl might struggle with.
    • Trade-Offs: While offering a wider view, budget-friendly ultra-wide eyepieces may exhibit some softness at the very edge of the field in fast (f/5 or lower) telescopes. This is a common trade-off for achieving the wide-field experience at an accessible price point.
  • How much magnification does the 6mm SVBONY 66° eyepiece give on an 8" f/10 SCT?

For an 8" f/10 SCT with a 2000mm focal length, the 6mm SVBONY 66° eyepiece gives 333x (2000 / 6), which is more than average seeing usually supports. On shorter focal length telescopes it gives a more usable high power for the Moon and planets.

How does the 66° field of the SVBONY eyepiece help when observing the Orion Nebula (M42)?

The 66° field of view allows you to see more of the surrounding nebulosity and the "wings" of the Orion Nebula (M42) at the same time you are observing the central Trapezium star cluster. A narrower eyepiece would require you to pan around to see the full extent of the object.

What is the advantage of the SVBONY 66° eyepiece over a standard Plössl?

The main advantage is the significantly wider 66° apparent field of view compared to the ~52° field of a Plössl. This provides a more immersive, "spacewalk" feeling and makes it easier to frame large celestial objects without having to move the telescope as often.

Can I use 1.25" filters with the SVBONY 6mm 66° eyepiece?

Yes. The 1.25" barrel of the SVBONY 6mm 66° eyepiece is threaded to accept all standard 1.25" astronomy filters, such as moon filters, planetary color filters, or light pollution filters.

What kind of optical coatings does the SVBONY 6mm 66° eyepiece have?

This eyepiece features fully multi-coated optics. This means that all air-to-glass surfaces have multiple layers of anti-reflection coatings to maximize light transmission and image contrast.
