Spacewalk Views with Room for Eyeglasses: The Tele Vue Nagler Type 7 9mm
The Tele Vue Nagler Type 7 9mm delivers the 82° "spacewalk" field Naglers are known for, with 19mm of eye relief. Tele Vue designed the Type 7 series to give eyeglass-friendly eye relief without the size and weight of an even wider design, so observers who keep their glasses on can still take in the whole field.
The 82° Nagler Apparent Field
An 82° apparent field is wide enough to reach into your peripheral vision. The edge of the view fades from attention, and the telescope seems to "disappear," which is the effect Al Nagler set out to create. Compared with a 50° eyepiece, an 82° field shows almost three times the area of sky.
19mm of Eye Relief and an Adjustable Eyeguard
Long eye relief is the reason the Type 7 exists. With 19mm of eye relief and an adjustable-height eyeguard, you can set the eyepiece for viewing with glasses on or off. Tele Vue recommends the Type 7 for eyeglass wearers and for observers who correct astigmatism with Tele Vue DIOPTRX lenses.
1.25"/2" Barrel
The eyepiece has both a 2" and a 1.25" barrel, so it fits either size of focuser or diagonal without an adapter. Like other Tele Vue 2"/1.25" models, it also accepts the 2" Eyepiece Barrel Extension (EBX-2120), which lets you use 2" filters as well as 1.25" ones.
Contrast by Design
Tele Vue blackens the lens edges, uses anti-reflection threads and fits a rubber eyeguard to keep stray light out of the view. Every Tele Vue eyepiece is visually inspected across its full field on Tele Vue's own flat-field test instruments before it ships.
A Sample View
In a 8" f/6 Dobsonian (1200mm focal length), the 9mm Type 7 gives about 133x with a true field of roughly 0.62°. That is a comfortable scale for the Ring Nebula and bright planetary nebulae, with enough sky around it to keep the view in context.
Choosing Among the Naglers
Tele Vue makes four Nagler types to balance different needs. The Type 5 (31mm and 16mm) gives the largest true fields, the Type 6 (13mm to 3.5mm) is the most compact, and the Type 4 22mm and Type 7 series give long eye relief for eyeglass wearers. Choose the Type 7 when you want the full 82° field without taking your glasses off.

Do I need a Paracorr with a fast Newtonian?
In Newtonian reflectors around f/5 or faster, a Tele Vue Paracorr Type 2 removes the coma that the mirror itself produces at the edge of the field. Refractors and Schmidt-Cassegrains do not need it.
