  • TeleVue Plössl 25mm 50° Eyepiece - 1.25"

The TeleVue Plössl 25mm is a versatile, medium-power workhorse that strikes an ideal balance between magnification and field of view. While the larger 32mm and 40mm versions are designed to push the physical limits of the 1.25-inch barrel, the 25mm Plössl is optimized for high-contrast lunar, planetary, and deep-sky observation where framing and detail are equally prioritized.

As part of the original TeleVue Plössl series, this eyepiece is engineered to outperform generic four-element designs by utilizing superior glass types and precision multi-coatings. It delivers a 50° apparent field that is diffraction-limited, ensuring that star images remain sharp and pinpoint from the center of the axis to the very edge of the field stop.

A Balanced Perspective for Medium Power

For many observers, the 25mm focal length represents the "sweet spot" for mid-range scanning. In an 8" f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain, it provides 80x magnification and a 2.5mm exit pupil, settings that are frequently cited by experts as optimal for resolving globular clusters and larger planetary nebulae. Unlike the TeleVue 32mm Plössl, which is often used for locating objects, the 25mm begins to reveal the intricate textures within those objects.

Because it shares the same high-index glass and optical pedigree as its larger siblings, the 25mm Plössl maintains exceptional throughput. This makes it a preferred choice for viewing faint, low-surface-brightness targets where complex, multi-lens wide-field eyepieces might introduce unwanted light loss.

    TeleVue Optical Integrity

Every TeleVue Plössl 25mm is built to deliver a neutral color rendition and a jet-black sky background. By minimizing internal reflections and scattering, TeleVue ensures that the subtle color differences on the Jovian cloud belts or the delicate hues of double stars are rendered accurately.

    • Blackened Lens Edges: To prevent stray light from degrading contrast, all lens edges are chemically blackened, and internal surfaces are multi-threaded for maximum light absorption.
    • Parfocal Convenience: The 25mm Plössl is parfocal with the 32mm and smaller focal lengths in the series. This allows for seamless transitions between powers without the need for significant refocusing, which is critical during nights of steady seeing.
    • Mechanical Precision: The chrome-plated barrel is machined to tight tolerances to ensure it remains perfectly centered in the focuser, preserving the optical alignment of your entire system.

    Viewing Comfort and Eye Placement

With 17mm of eye relief, the 25mm Plössl provides a comfortable viewing experience for most users. While slightly shorter than the 22mm found on the TeleVue 32mm Plössl, it still allows many eyeglass wearers to see the full field without difficulty. For those who do not wear glasses, the eyepiece offers a stable eye position that minimizes the chance of image blackouts.

    • Rubber Eyeguard: The included fold-down rubber eyeguard helps to position the eye at the correct distance and shields the observer from peripheral light pollution.
    • Compact Form Factor: The lightweight design makes this an ideal candidate for smaller telescopes and travel setups where larger, heavier eyepieces would compromise the mount's balance.

    Why Choose the 25mm Plössl?

In a collection of eyepieces, the 25mm Plössl often becomes the most used accessory. It is lightweight, compact, and provides higher magnification than a 32mm while maintaining a much brighter exit pupil than a 15mm or 11mm. Whether you are using it in a binoviewer for a high-fidelity lunar experience or as your primary deep-sky tool, the TeleVue 25mm Plössl offers professional-grade performance in a simple, elegant design.

  • How does the 25mm compare to the TeleVue 32mm Plössl?

The 25mm provides higher magnification than the TeleVue 32mm Plössl, making it better suited for resolving finer details in clusters and nebulae. While the TeleVue 32mm Plössl maximizes the 1.25" true field of view for finding objects, the 25mm offers a darker sky background and a smaller exit pupil, which can help "pop" faint details out of light-polluted skies.

Is the 25mm Plössl a good choice for binoviewers?

Absolutely. Many observers prefer the 25mm focal length over the TeleVue 32mm Plössl for binoviewing because it provides a bit more magnification while remaining very lightweight. A pair of 25mm Plössls is excellent for "spacewalk" lunar views and is easy to balance on most mounts.

Can I use the TeleVue 25mm Plössl with my glasses on?

The 25mm features 17mm of eye relief. For most users with thin glasses, the full 50° field is visible. However, if you have thick lenses or prefer more room, the TeleVue 32mm Plössl or 40mm Plössl offer even longer eye relief.

Will the 25mm Plössl work well in a fast (f/5) Newtonian?

Yes. While simple Plössl designs from other brands often show astigmatism at the edges in fast scopes, TeleVue Plössls are specifically designed to maintain sharpness. In an f/5 system, the 25mm yields a 5mm exit pupil, which is a perfect "all-around" setting for many deep-sky targets.

Is the 25mm Plössl parfocal with the other TeleVue Plössl models?

Yes, the TeleVue 8mm, 11mm, 15mm, 20mm, 25mm and 32mm Plössl are part of the same parfocal group. This means you can switch between eyepieces with little to no adjustment of the focuser. Note that the Tele Vue 40mm and 55mm Plössl are not parfocal with the rest of the series.
