Launch Visual AssistantThe TeleVue Plössl 40mm 43° Eyepiece has a 27mm field stop, the maximum for 1¼" eyepieces, so it shows the widest true field a 1¼" eyepiece can. It has a 43° apparent field, 28mm of eye relief, 4 elements in 2 groups, and weighs 6.6 oz (187 g). Its long focal length gives large exit pupils in long focal ratio telescopes.
The true field of view you see is determined not by the eyepiece's apparent field, but by its internal field stop diameter and your telescope's focal length. The TeleVue 40mm Plössl's 27mm field stop is the 1¼" maximum in Al Nagler's guide, so it suits low-power finding.
To calculate the true field, use the formula: True Field = (Eyepiece Field Stop ÷ Telescope Focal Length) x 57.3. For a telescope with a 2000mm focal length, the 40mm Plössl delivers a true field of (27mm / 2000mm) x 57.3 = 0.77 degrees. The 32mm Plössl and 24mm Panoptic share the same 27.0mm field stop, so they show the same sky at more magnification.
The exit pupil, or the beam of light exiting the eyepiece, dictates image brightness. Tele Vue's chart gives 8.9, 7.7, 5.7, 4.0 and 2.9mm at f/4.5, f/5.2, f/7, f/10 and f/14:
Al Nagler's guide gives Plössls 50°, and Tele Vue's chart lists the 40mm at 43°. The 40mm and 32mm both reach the 27.0mm field stop, so they show the same true field; at the 40mm's lower magnification that field looks smaller, 43° against 50°.
What it adds over the 32mm is lower power, a larger exit pupil and 28mm of eye relief against 22mm.
The 40mm Plössl has 28mm of eye relief, more than the 15mm to 20mm recommended for observers who wear glasses to correct astigmatism.
It accepts Tele Vue's Eyeguard Extender (EGE-0020), which raises the eyeguard by 8mm and includes a rubber eyeguard and eyepiece cap. Units stack: two units add 16mm and make a 40mm Plössl very comfortable for solar viewing, blocking stray daylight in white light or hydrogen-alpha viewing.
These accessories are available for it:
Since both the TeleVue 40mm and 32mm Plössls share the maximum 27mm field stop for a 1.25" barrel, they show the exact same true field of view. From Tele Vue's chart:
No. Both the TeleVue 40mm and 32mm Plössls use the maximum possible field stop for a 1.25" barrel, which is 27mm. Because true field of view is determined by the field stop, they both show the exact same patch of sky. The 40mm simply presents that view at a lower magnification.
The TeleVue 40mm Plössl gives a larger exit pupil, useful in long focal ratio telescopes (4.0mm at f/10 against 3.2mm), and 28mm of eye relief against 22mm. The 32mm gives a 50° field.
Its 27mm field stop is already the 1¼" maximum, the same as the 32mm Plössl's. Both show the same true field, and at the 40mm's lower magnification that field appears as 43° rather than 50°.
In reflectors it can. At f/4.5 it gives 8.9mm, over the 7mm limit for reflectors. When the exit pupil is bigger than your eye's pupil, as on the Moon or by day, the secondary's shadow can show. At f/10 it gives 4.0mm.
In an 8" f/10 SCT of 2032mm focal length it gives 51x, a 4.0mm exit pupil and a 0.76° true field (27 ÷ 2032 x 57.3). That shows M31's bright core with M32 beside it; the galaxy itself is about 3° long, and M110 sits outside the field.
Not by itself: at f/4.5 it gives 8.9mm, over the 7mm recommended maximum for reflectors. A TeleVue Paracorr Type-2 removes coma and its 1.15x factor brings the exit pupil to 7.7mm, still over 7mm. In that telescope the 24mm Panoptic (5.3mm), with the same field stop, fits better.
Yes. The TeleVue 40mm Plössl is fully compatible with the Dioptrx system. Choose the Dioptrx model that matches your eyeglass prescription for astigmatism and attach it to the top of the eyepiece. Dioptrx is always completely aligned to the eyepiece optics, so you're more likely to see a sharper, higher contrast image than with eyeglasses.
The 28mm eye relief is excellent for eyeglass wearers. Without glasses, the manual's answer is the TeleVue Eyeguard Extender (EGE-0020), which raises the eyeguard by 8mm; two can be stacked for 16mm.
It takes 1¼" filters (M28.5x0.6). Tele Vue's insert lists BandMate Nebustar, a general-purpose nebula filter that, unlike typical UHC designs, blocks red wavelengths; O-III; and H-Beta.
Do not unscrew the chrome barrel! The lenses will fall out, voiding the warranty.
