Light Pollution Filters
Light pollution filters have become a more complicated recommendation than they were twenty years ago. Against the old sodium and mercury street lighting they worked remarkably well; against broad-spectrum LED there is no narrow band left to reject. A filter removes wavelengths. It works when the unwanted light occupies a different part of the spectrum from the light you want, and fails when they overlap.
- Broadband city light filters: Reject mercury and sodium emission lines while passing most of the visible spectrum. Effective under older street lighting, much less so under LED.
- UHC-type filters: Pass a narrower band containing the main nebula emission lines. Strong contrast gain on emission nebulae regardless of the lighting type causing the skyglow.
- OIII filters: Very narrow, dramatic on planetary nebulae and supernova remnants, and dim enough to want substantial aperture behind them.
- Dual-band imaging filters: Pass Ha and OIII together for one-shot colour cameras, which is the most effective light pollution strategy currently available for imagers.
- What they do not help: Galaxies, star clusters and reflection nebulae emit across the spectrum. A narrow filter removes their light along with the skyglow.
- LED lighting reality: Broad-spectrum white LED leaves no gap to filter, which is why narrowband and dual-band approaches have largely replaced broadband filters for imaging.

Light Pollution Filters in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions
- Will a light pollution filter help under LED streetlights?
- A broadband one, very little — LED emits across the visible spectrum with no narrow band to reject. A UHC or narrowband filter still works well on emission nebulae because it passes only specific emission lines.
- Do these filters help with galaxies?
- Essentially no. Galaxy light is broadband, so a filter removes it in the same proportion as the skyglow. Darker skies are the only real answer for galaxies.
- Which filter for visual use in a city?
- A UHC-type filter gives the best contrast gain across the widest range of emission targets, and is a better first purchase than a narrower OIII for most apertures.
- What about imaging from a bright site?
- Use dual-band or narrowband filters rather than broadband light pollution filters. They isolate the emission lines and reject nearly everything else, which is far more effective.
