The Kowa Genesis 8x22 Compact Binocular delivers an expansive 393 ft field of view at 1,000 yards from a body weighing just 11.1 oz. Its 22 mm PROMINAR XD objective lenses achieve a close focus of only 4.9 ft, and Kowa lists 15.0 mm of eye relief. This compact binocular puts Kowa's XD lenses into a magnesium alloy body measuring just 4.1 inches long, for birding, travel, and wildlife observation.
At the heart of the Genesis 8x22 are Kowa's XD objective lenses: high resolution ED glass containing large amounts of fluorite crystal, which Kowa describes as giving high light transmission. Glass of this kind reduces chromatic aberration (color fringing), and Kowa says the result is pin sharp images with natural color, high contrast and fine detail, from a bird's plumage to a distant landscape.
The Genesis 8x22 is engineered to provide an immersive viewing experience. Its 8x magnification is paired with a wide 393 ft field of view at 1,000 yards, making it easy to locate subjects and track moving wildlife without constantly panning. This wide perspective helps when birding in dense habitats or scanning open fields.
Kowa lists 15.0 mm of eye relief, and Kowa's Genesis 22 manual says the multi-step twist-up eyecups provide proper eye relief for use with or without eyeglasses. The close focus distance of just 4.9 ft allows for detailed observation of nearby subjects like butterflies, insects, or birds at a feeder.
Designed for the serious traveller and outdoors enthusiast, the Genesis 8x22 weighs a mere 11.1 oz. The body is magnesium alloy, which Kowa says gives the benefits of high strength metal in a lightweight structure. The result is a binocular that feels solid and balanced in the hand yet won't weigh you down on a long hike.
Kowa describes a streamlined non-slip body with tough rubber armor, smooth and solid hinges, twist-up eyecups and a responsive focus wheel. The diopter ring on the right barrel is a locking ring.
The Kowa Genesis 8x22 is built to perform in the toughest environments. Kowa states that Genesis binoculars are fully waterproof and dry nitrogen filled to prevent fogging, with tough rubber armor. The manual adds that the binocular should not be used in water or washed in rapidly running water, and that water and moisture on the outside should be wiped away immediately before continued use.
The companion model in this series, the Genesis 10x22, offers higher 10x magnification, which can resolve finer details on distant subjects. However, this comes with specific trade-offs when compared to the 8x22 model.
Choose the Genesis 8x22 for a wider field and a steadier handheld view. Choose the 10x22 if your priority is more magnification on distant, static subjects.
Kowa's Genesis 22 manual sets the binocular up in four steps. First, the eyecups: if you do not wear eyeglasses, turn the multi-step twist-up eyecups counterclockwise to the position you want; if you wear eyeglasses, twist them down until they sit flush with the eyepiece lens. Next, the interpupillary distance: look at an object through the binocular and move the two barrels closer together or farther apart until the two circular images become one.
Then set the diopter for the difference between your eyes: choose a motionless object, cover the right objective lens with your hand and turn the focus knob until the image is sharp for your left eye. Cover the left objective lens, look through the right eyepiece at the same object and turn the diopter ring on the right barrel until the image is in focus. From then on, focus by turning the focus knob while viewing through both barrels. Kowa lists a locking diopter ring for the Genesis 22.
The Kowa Genesis 8x22 comes with a protective case, a neck strap, stay-on caps and rainguard, and a cleaning cloth. Kowa describes the Genesis case as a luxury case and the strap as comfortable and padded. The manual shows how to attach the strap and asks you to check that the adjuster faces the right way and that at least 4 cm of strap extends past it, since otherwise the strap can slip and the binocular could fall.
Kowa stands behind the Genesis 8x22 with a Limited Lifetime Warranty for the original owner who purchases from an authorized North American retailer. This warranty, subject to normal wear and tear, covers defects in materials and workmanship; Kowa will, at its discretion, repair or replace a defective product free of charge. Kowa requests product registration within 30 days of purchase. See the Kowa warranty policy.
PROMINAR is the name Kowa gives to its most advanced and highest quality optical products. The XD objective lenses in the Genesis 8x22 are high resolution ED glass containing large amounts of fluorite crystal (not the Pure Fluorite Crystal lens used in Kowa's PROMINAR spotting scopes). Kowa says they give pin sharp images with natural color, high contrast and fine detail.
Kowa's Genesis 22 manual says the multi-step twist-up eyecups provide proper eye relief for use with or without eyeglasses: if you wear glasses, twist the eyecups down until they sit flush with the eyepiece lens. kowaoptics.com lists 15.0 mm eye relief for the 8x22.
The primary advantage of the Genesis 8x22 is its wider field of view (393 ft at 1,000 yds vs. 315 ft on the 10x22). This makes it easier to find and track moving subjects like birds. The lower magnification also gives a steadier, easier-to-hold image.
Yes. The Genesis 8x22 suits close-range observation. It features a minimum focusing distance of just 4.9 feet, giving magnified views of birds at a feeder, insects on a flower, or other nearby wildlife.
Its body is made from a lightweight yet strong magnesium alloy, protected by tough rubber armor. It is also fully waterproof and dry nitrogen filled to prevent fogging. Kowa's manual advises not to drop it, not to use it in water or wash it under running water, and not to leave it in a car or near heat.
Kowa says the Genesis prism system gives a wide field of view and edge to edge sharpness with minimal loss of light, even in low light conditions, and that its lens coatings enhance light transmission. Kowa gives no low-light figures for the 8x22, and a 22mm objective gathers less light than a larger one.
Kowa's manual says to look at an object through the binocular and move the two barrels closer together or farther apart until the two circular images become one. The centers of the eyepiece lenses are then the same distance apart as your pupils.
The diopter ring on the right barrel adjusts for the difference in visual acuity between your eyes. Kowa lists a locking diopter ring for the Genesis 22, so the setting is held once adjusted. After that, you focus with the focus knob while viewing through both barrels.
Kowa says the KR coating repels dirt and fluid. The manual says to remove dust from the lens with a blower, a can of air or a soft oil-free brush, then lightly wipe the lens with a lens cloth, gauze or cleaning paper dampened with a small amount of lens cleaner. Store the binocular in a well-ventilated dry place; for long storage, use an airtight container with desiccant.
The Kowa Limited Lifetime Warranty covers the original owner for defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the product, provided it was purchased from an authorized North American retailer. It does not cover damage from misuse, unauthorized repair, or normal wear and tear. If defects are found, Kowa will, at its discretion, repair or replace the product free of charge. Kowa requests product registration within 30 days of purchase.
