  • Kowa High Lander PROMINAR Binocular

The Kowa High Lander PROMINAR Binocular combines twin 82mm pure fluorite crystal objective lenses with an interchangeable eyepiece system for high-magnification, long-range observation. With the included 32x wide eyepieces, you get a 70° apparent field of view and 20mm of eye relief for comfortable, immersive viewing. The 6.2 kg (14 lb) instrument is built around a magnesium alloy body and is made in Japan.

Kowa High Lander PROMINAR 82mm objectives

Twin 82mm Pure Fluorite Crystal Objectives

At the heart of the High Lander PROMINAR are two 82mm objective lenses, each crafted from pure fluorite crystal. Fluorite has very low dispersion, which lets Kowa virtually eliminate chromatic aberration (false color). Kowa describes the result as distortion-free viewing with edge to edge sharpness, with vivid, detailed images at high magnification.

The large 82mm aperture gives excellent light-gathering power. Kowa notes that extended high-magnification observation is comfortable, without eye fatigue, thanks to the stereoscopic effect of viewing with both eyes. Kowa lists a 95mm filter thread.

Kowa High Lander PROMINAR 32x eyepieces

The Standard 32x View: A 70° Apparent Field with 20mm of Eye Relief

Included with the High Lander PROMINAR is a pair of precisely matched 32x wide-angle eyepieces. These eyepieces produce a 70° apparent field of view, which Kowa describes as a true to life, immersive view. The field covers 124.6 feet at 1,000 yards (38.4 m at 1,000 m), making it easier to scan distant landscapes or track moving subjects without constantly repositioning the binocular.

The 32x eyepieces have 20mm of eye relief. The combination of magnification and aperture yields a 2.6mm exit pupil (relative brightness 6.8, twilight factor 51.2 per the manual). Focusing is done with a separate focus ring below each eyepiece, so each eye is focused independently.

Field-Ready Build: A 6.2 kg Magnesium Alloy Body

The High Lander PROMINAR is manufactured in Japan. The main body is molded from magnesium alloy, a lightweight metal that Kowa says makes the binocular extremely tough and durable. It measures 425 x 240 x 152 mm, and a built-in carry handle makes it easier to transport. The handle carries a sightline: aligning it with the protrusion on the main body helps you point the binocular at your subject.

The interpupillary distance is adjusted by moving the eyepieces left and right while looking through them. Twist sunshades (sliding hoods) on the objectives can be pulled out when facing the sun.

    Weather Resistance: Waterproof and Nitrogen-Filled

On kowaoptics.com, Kowa describes the High Lander PROMINAR as a completely waterproof design filled with dry nitrogen gas. Kowa gives no waterproof depth or rating for it.

Kowa states that the nitrogen filling prevents fogging. When facing the sun, pull out the sliding hoods to keep unwanted light from entering the binocular. After use in dusty or humid conditions, the manual says to clean and dry the binocular, replace the lens caps and store it in a vinyl bag with desiccant in a dry place.

    Kowa High Lander interchangeable eyepieces

The Interchangeable Eyepiece System: 32x, 21x, and 50x

A key feature of the High Lander PROMINAR is its ability to adapt to different viewing situations via optional eyepieces. Besides the included 32x pair, Kowa offers two other wide eyepieces, sold separately. Figures below are from the High Lander manual.

    • Standard 32x Wide: 2.2° real field (70° apparent), 2.6mm exit pupil, 20.0mm eye relief, 38.4 m at 1,000 m.
    • Optional TE-21WH (21x Wide): 3.0° real field (63° apparent), 3.9mm exit pupil, 17.0mm eye relief, 52.4 m at 1,000 m. The wider field suits scanning large areas.
    • Optional TE-9WH (50x Wide): 1.3° real field (67° apparent), 1.6mm exit pupil, 15.0mm eye relief, 22.7 m at 1,000 m. The highest magnification of the three, for detail on distant subjects. The manual notes that with the 50x eyepieces some people may have difficulty seeing one image at the minimum focusing distance.

Mounting the 14 lb Binocular: 1/4" and 3/8" Support

At 6.2 kg (14 lb), the High Lander PROMINAR requires a robust tripod and head for stable, shake-free viewing. It can be used with a standard camera tripod (1/4 in) or a large type tripod (3/8 in). To use a 3/8 in tripod, remove the adapter screw from the tripod mount on the underside of the binocular.

Kowa also offers an optional center mount and wooden tripod. To fit it, remove the standard tripod mount (4 hexagonal bolts, with an allen wrench), attach the mount block included with the center mount, fit the block onto the center mount's axis and lock it down with the screw, making sure it is fully secured. The viewing position is then adjusted by loosening screws A and B. Kowa also offers an aluminum storage case (BL8J-AC), sold separately.

  • What kind of tripod is required for the Kowa High Lander PROMINAR?

Due to its substantial 6.2 kg (14 lb) weight, the Kowa High Lander PROMINAR requires a strong and sturdy tripod with a high load capacity. It can be used with a standard camera tripod (1/4 in) or a large type tripod (3/8 in); for 3/8 in, remove the adapter screw from the tripod mount.

How do I focus the Kowa High Lander PROMINAR?

The High Lander uses an individual eyepiece focus system instead of a central focus knob. Each eyepiece has its own rotating focusing ring located just below it. This allows you to set the focus for each eye independently, achieving a sharp image for your vision and compensating for any differences between your eyes.

What is the main benefit of the 82mm pure fluorite crystal lenses?

The primary benefit of pure fluorite crystal is the near-total elimination of chromatic aberration, or false color fringing. This results in exceptionally high-contrast and sharp images, with edge to edge sharpness, as Kowa describes it. The large 82mm aperture also provides excellent light-gathering ability for bright views, even in low-light conditions at dawn or dusk.

Which optional accessories does Kowa list for the High Lander PROMINAR?

The manual lists a center mount / wooden tripod, 50x eyepieces (TE-9WH), 21x eyepieces (TE-21WH) and an aluminum case (BL8J-AC on kowaoptics.com). All are sold separately.

How does the optional 21x eyepiece change the view from the standard 32x?

The optional 21x eyepiece (TE-21WH) provides a wider real field of view (3.0° vs 2.2°), a larger exit pupil (3.9mm vs 2.6mm) and a higher relative brightness (15.2 vs 6.8), per the High Lander manual. Its eye relief is 17.0mm against 20.0mm for the 32x. The wider field makes scanning easier, while the standard 32x shows more detail on distant subjects.

What is the minimum focusing distance of the High Lander PROMINAR?

The minimum focus distance is 20 meters (65.6 feet). Focus runs from 20 m to infinity, so it is meant for distant subjects. The manual notes that with the 50x eyepieces some people may have difficulty seeing one image at the minimum focusing distance.

Is the Kowa High Lander PROMINAR waterproof?

Kowa describes the High Lander PROMINAR as a completely waterproof design filled with dry nitrogen gas to prevent fogging. Kowa gives no waterproof depth or rating.

How do I clean the large 82mm objective lenses on the High Lander?

First, use a blower to remove any loose dust or grit. Then, apply a dedicated lens cleaning fluid to a fresh piece of lens tissue or a clean microfiber cloth. Clean the lens with a gentle, circular motion, starting from the center and working your way outwards. Clean the body with a soft cloth moistened with warm water and mild detergent, never with solvents.

Which eyepieces can I use with the High Lander PROMINAR?

Kowa lists only the included 32x eyepieces and the optional Kowa TE-21WH (21x) and TE-9WH (50x) eyepieces for the High Lander PROMINAR. The eyepieces push into the focus rings and lock into place.

What does the carry handle on the Kowa High Lander PROMINAR do?

The integrated handle serves two purposes. Its primary function is to make it easier and safer to transport the 14 lb binocular. Secondly, it incorporates a sightline, which you can use as a simple aiming device to quickly point the binoculars at a distant target before looking through the eyepieces.
