  • Kowa PROMINAR TSN-88A ZM SET with TE-11WZ II Zoom Eyepiece

The Kowa PROMINAR TSN-88A ZM SET pairs an 88mm pure fluorite crystal objective with the versatile TE-11WZ II 25-60x zoom eyepiece, creating a flagship instrument for serious nature observers. This angled scope focuses down to just 5m (16.4 ft), while its advanced optical design virtually eliminates chromatic aberration for true-to-life color rendition. The entire system, housed in a rugged 3.21 lb magnesium alloy body, is built for optical clarity and field durability.

    Kowa TSN-88 PROMINAR light transmission

The PROMINAR Optical System: An 88mm Pure Fluorite Crystal Objective

At the core of the TSN-88A is a large 88mm objective lens crafted from pure fluorite crystal. Unlike conventional glass, fluorite has exceptionally low dispersion characteristics, which virtually eliminates chromatic aberration (the color fringing visible on high-contrast edges). This results in a view with natural, accurate color, allowing you to distinguish subtle plumage details on a distant bird or the true tones of a landscape.

Kowa pairs the fluorite element with an XD concave lens and has improved the optical coatings applied not only to the lenses but also to the prism. The result is higher light transmission than the previous model across the entire color spectrum, which helps in the low light of dawn and dusk. Kowa's aim is the impression of seeing an object not through a scope but through your own unfiltered eyes.

Angled Body: The Angled Viewing Version of the TSN-88

The TSN-88A is the angled viewing version of the TSN-88 PROMINAR: the eyepiece sits at an angle to the main body rather than in line with it. Kowa also makes the straight TSN-88S, with the same 88 mm fluorite crystal objective, 5 m minimum focus, 95 mm filter thread and dual focus.

The angled TSN-88A body is 13.4 in long and weighs 3.21 lb. Kowa does not rank one body type above the other, so the choice between angled and straight is a matter of personal preference.

Eyepiece System: 25-60x Magnification with the TE-11WZ II

This set includes the high-performance TE-11WZ II wide-angle zoom eyepiece, providing a seamless magnification range from 25-60x. At 25x, you get a wide 138-foot field of view at 1,000 yards for scanning landscapes and locating subjects. As you zoom to 60x, the field narrows to 75 feet, for studying fine detail.

The eyepiece has 17 mm of eye relief and weighs 0.80 lb. The bayonet mount system includes a secure locking mechanism and an eyepiece release button, allowing for quick and secure changes in the field. The TSN-88A is also compatible with other Kowa eyepieces, such as the TE-80XW for an extremely wide 35x fixed-power view (147.6 ft at 1,000 yards) and the TE-20H long eye relief eyepiece.

Kowa TSN-88 PROMINAR dual focus wheel

Dual Focus Mechanism: Pinpoint Control from 5m to Infinity

The TSN-88A is equipped with a highly refined dual focus system, allowing for both rapid and precise focusing. The quick focus brings a subject that is well out of focus into focus 3 times faster than the fine focus, in just a few smooth revolutions. This speed is critical for tracking moving subjects like birds in flight or wildlife on the move.

The fine focus provides fingertip control for achieving critical sharpness, especially at high magnification. The smooth, precise action of the fine focus allows you to resolve the most subtle textures and details, for a crisp view.

Field-Proven Build: A 3.21 lb Magnesium Alloy Chassis

The TSN-88A's body is constructed from a 100% magnesium alloy, which Kowa says makes it tougher and lighter than its predecessor; the scope weighs 3.21 lb. The shell is fully waterproof and nitrogen sealed, which guards against internal fogging.

Every component is designed for reliability in the field. The scope includes an integrated, twist-out sunshade to block stray light and protect the objective lens from rain. The tripod mount has a removable screw, so it fits both 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch tripod heads.

KR Coating: Active Protection from Dirt and Moisture

The objective lens of the TSN-88A carries an upgraded version of Kowa's KR coating, which repels dirt, moisture and dust from building on the surface.

Kowa says that, together with the fully waterproof and nitrogen sealed shell, the KR coating makes the scope reassuringly rugged.

Digiscoping with the Kowa TSN-88 PROMINAR

The King of Digiscoping: Kowa Camera Adapters

Kowa calls the TSN-88 PROMINAR the king of digiscoping (taking high-magnification photos through the scope's eyepiece) and lists this set as ideal for digiscoping with a camera or smartphone. The scope features an accessory collar protected by a removable ring. This collar serves as the mounting point for Kowa digiscoping adapters, giving a secure, rigid connection for cameras.

For DSLR and mirrorless cameras, Kowa's TSN-PA7 and TSN-DA10 adapters work with the included TE-11WZ II eyepiece to turn the TSN-88A into a super telephoto lens. Kowa says the improved coatings further enhance digiscoping performance even at the highest magnifications, producing images that were once only achievable with high end DSLR systems.

Filters and Protection: The 95mm Thread and Optional Accessories

The front of the TSN-88A's housing features a 95mm filter thread, allowing for the direct attachment of protective and specialized filters. Kowa's TP-95FT 95 mm protection filter, made for the TSN-99 and TSN-88 PROMINAR scopes, carries Kowa KR coating to repel dirt and moisture and helps protect the objective lens from harsh environments.

For long range observation, the Kowa TSN-EX16 1.6x extender increases the magnification of the TE-11WZ II by 1.6x and has its own accessory collar for Kowa digiscoping adapters. For transport, Kowa makes the C-88A-N neoprene case for the TSN-88A.

Setup and Handling: Tripod Mounts, Aiming Sight, and Eyepiece Lock

Designed for efficient use in the field, the TSN-88A incorporates several features to get you on target quickly. The dual tripod mount includes a removable screw, allowing it to fit both 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch tripod heads. Kowa advises using a stable tripod, since observing with a hand-held spotting scope is difficult because of image blurring.

Finding a distant object is made easier with the aiming sight integrated into the sliding sunshade. Simply align the sight with your target before looking through the eyepiece. To fit the eyepiece, align the red dot on the eyepiece with the red dot on the bayonet mount, insert it and twist clockwise until it clicks into the locked position. To remove it, press and hold the quick release button and turn the eyepiece anti-clockwise.

Care and Maintenance: Preserving Optical Integrity for a Lifetime

Proper care is essential for maintaining the PROMINAR's optical performance. Before cleaning the lens, always use a blower or soft brush to remove any abrasive dust or grit. Gently clean the lens with a light circular motion using an optics cleaning cloth, gauze or cleaning paper. Commercial lens cleaners can leave a film on the lens, so use only the smallest possible amounts.

Clean the scope body with a blower and a clean, soft cloth, and never use solvents such as acetone, benzene or thinner. After use in damp or coastal environments, it's critical to clean and thoroughly dry the scope at room temperature before storage. Storing a scope without cleaning it first can lead to stains and mold. Remove the lens cap to store the scope in a dry place, and for long periods place it in an airtight container with desiccant.

Kowa TSN-88A vs. TSN-99A: Aperture and Portability

Kowa also makes the larger TSN-99A. The primary difference is the objective lens diameter: 88mm on the TSN-88A versus 99mm on the TSN-99A. The larger aperture of the TSN-99A gathers more light.

This advantage in light gathering comes with trade-offs in size and weight. The TSN-88A is shorter and weighs 3.21 lbs, making it more portable and easier to carry over long distances. The choice depends on whether you value the extra aperture or the lighter, more compact body.

  • What is the main advantage of the Kowa TSN-88A's pure fluorite crystal lens?

The 88mm pure fluorite crystal objective virtually eliminates chromatic aberration (color fringing). This results in exceptionally accurate color reproduction and higher contrast, allowing you to see fine details and true-to-life colors that would be obscured by false color in scopes with conventional glass optics.

How does the dual focus system on the TSN-88A work?

The focus knob has a two-step mechanism, one step for quick focusing and one for fine focusing. When the subject is well out of focus, the quick focus brings it into focus 3 times faster than the fine focus; the fine focus is for fine focusing and slight adjustments, with a smooth transition between the two. Do not turn the focus knob beyond its turning range, as this damages the focusing mechanism.

How does the angled TSN-88A differ from the straight TSN-88S?

The TSN-88A is the angled viewing version and the TSN-88S the straight version of the same TSN-88 PROMINAR, with the same 88 mm fluorite crystal objective, 5 m minimum focus, 95 mm filter thread and dual focus. The angled TSN-88A is 13.4 in long and weighs 3.21 lb. Kowa does not rank one body type above the other, so the choice is a matter of personal preference.

What are the benefits of the included TE-11WZ II eyepiece?

The TE-11WZ II is a high-performance wide-angle zoom eyepiece. It gives the Kowa TSN-88A a versatile magnification range of 25-60x, allowing you to use low power for scanning and high power for detailed study without changing eyepieces. It also provides a comfortable 17mm of eye relief.

Can I use other eyepieces with the Kowa TSN-88A body?

Yes. The Kowa TSN-88A uses a bayonet mount and accepts the Kowa eyepieces Kowa lists for the TSN-99, TSN-88, TSN-77 and TSN-66 scopes. This includes the TE-80XW Extreme Wide Angle eyepiece (35x on this body) and the TE-20H Long Eye Relief eyepiece.

How do I attach a camera for digiscoping with the TSN-88A?

With no eyepiece attached, turn the protective ring on the accessory mount counter-clockwise to unscrew it (it can only be removed when no eyepiece is attached). Then attach the appropriate Kowa digiscoping adapter, such as the TSN-PA7 for DSLR and mirrorless/MFT cameras or the TSN-DA10 for compact Micro Four Thirds and mirrorless cameras; both are used with the TE-11WZ II eyepiece.

What kind of tripod should I use with the Kowa TSN-88A?

Kowa advises a stable tripod, since observing with a hand-held spotting scope is difficult because of image blurring. The tripod mount has a removable screw, so it fits 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch tripod heads. The scope body weighs 3.21 lb and the TE-11WZ II eyepiece 0.80 lb.

What does the KR coating on the TSN-88A's objective lens do?

The KR coating on the objective lens repels dirt, moisture and dust from building on the surface. Kowa says that, together with the fully waterproof and nitrogen sealed shell, it makes the scope reassuringly rugged.

What is the purpose of the 95mm filter thread on the TSN-88A?

The 95mm filter thread lets various types of filters be attached in front of the objective lens. Kowa's TP-95FT protection filter, made for the TSN-99 and TSN-88, carries KR coating to repel dirt and moisture and helps protect the objective lens from harsh environments.

How does the Kowa TSN-88A compare to the larger TSN-99A?

The TSN-99A has a larger 99 mm objective, which gathers more light. The TSN-88A is the more compact and lighter of the two, at 13.4 in and 3.21 lb. Both use a pure fluorite crystal objective, dual focus and the same Kowa eyepieces.
