  • Kowa TE-20H Long Eye Relief Eyepiece

The Kowa TE-20H Long Eye Relief Eyepiece has 32mm of eye relief. It gives a fixed 30x magnification on Kowa's 99mm TSN-99 scopes and 25x on the TSN-88, TSN-77 and TSN-66 series. It uses Kowa XD lenses, which Kowa says deliver crisp images and true color.

    Designed for Kowa's TSN-99, 88, 77 and 66 Scopes

Kowa lists the TE-20H for the TSN-99, TSN-88, TSN-77 and TSN-66 spotting scopes. Kowa does not list it for the TSN-82SV, TSN-660M or TSN-600, for which it lists the TE-9Z, TE-14WD and TE-17HD.

Fixed 25x/30x Magnification with 32mm of Eye Relief

The Kowa TE-20H is a fixed-power eyepiece that delivers a different magnification depending on the focal length of the scope body it's attached to. On the TSN-99 series it gives 30x. On the TSN-88, TSN-77 or TSN-66 series it gives 25x.

Its defining feature is 32mm of eye relief, against 17mm for Kowa's TE-11WZ II and TE-80XW. Longer eye relief lets you hold your eye farther from the lens while still seeing the full field. Kowa gives no field of view figure for the TE-20H.

XD Lenses for High-Contrast, True-Color Views

The TE-20H uses Kowa XD (extra-low dispersion) lenses, which Kowa says deliver crisp images and true color. Extra-low dispersion glass reduces chromatic aberration, or "color fringing."

Less color fringing keeps high-contrast edges, such as a bird against a bright sky, cleaner. Kowa states nothing further about the coatings or lens layout of the TE-20H.

    Long Eye Relief in Use

Kowa describes the TE-20H as a long eye relief eyepiece with 32mm of eye relief, but makes no specific claim for eyeglass wearers.

Kowa does not describe an eyecup for the TE-20H in its material.

    Digiscoping

Kowa makes no specific digiscoping claim for the TE-20H.

The TSN-99, TSN-88 and TSN-66 bodies have an adapter accessory collar for Kowa digiscoping adapters, which Kowa says turns the scope into a super telephoto lens system. Kowa does not name a specific adapter for this eyepiece.

Kowa TE-20H vs. TE-11WZ II and TE-80XW Eyepieces

Choosing the right eyepiece for your TSN-99/88/77/66 scope involves a trade-off between eye relief, magnification versatility, and field of view. Kowa's figures for the three eyepieces:

    • Kowa TE-11WZ II Zoom: a magnification range of 30-70x (on TSN-99) or 25-60x (on TSN-88/66), with 17mm of eye relief. Choose it if you want to change magnification to scan for a subject and then zoom in for detail.
    • Kowa TE-80XW Extreme Wide Angle: a fixed 40x (TSN-99) or 35x (TSN-88/66), with a field of view of 147.6 ft at 1,000 yards on TSN-88/66 and 17mm of eye relief. Choose it for the widest fixed view of the three.
    • Kowa TE-20H Long Eye Relief: a fixed 30x (TSN-99) or 25x (TSN-88/77/66), with 32mm of eye relief, the longest of the three. Kowa gives no field of view figure for it.

    Fitting and Removing the Eyepiece

The TSN-99, TSN-88 and TSN-66 bodies have an eyepiece release button, which you press to remove the eyepiece.

Kowa's material gives no step by step fitting procedure for this eyepiece: follow the instruction manual of your spotting scope.

Care and Maintenance for Your Kowa Eyepiece

To maintain the optical quality of your TE-20H, it is important to keep the lens surfaces clean. Keep it protected from dust when it is off the scope body. For cleaning, first remove any loose dust or grit with a blower bulb or a soft camel hair brush.

For fingerprints or smudges, use a dedicated lens cleaning fluid and a microfiber cloth. Apply a drop of fluid to the cloth, not directly to the lens, and gently wipe in a circular motion from the center outwards. Kowa's material gives no care instructions specific to the TE-20H.

    Kowa's Limited Lifetime Warranty

The Kowa TE-20H eyepiece is covered by Kowa's Limited Lifetime Warranty for the original owner when purchased from an authorized North American retailer. This warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use; it does not cover damage from unauthorized repair, alteration, abuse or misuse, or normal wear and tear. Kowa requests product registration within 30 days of purchase.

  • Which Kowa spotting scopes is the TE-20H eyepiece compatible with?

Kowa lists the TE-20H for the TSN-99, TSN-88, TSN-77 and TSN-66 series spotting scopes. It does not list it for the TSN-82SV.

What is the main advantage of the Kowa TE-20H's 32mm eye relief?

With 32mm of eye relief (against 17mm on Kowa's TE-11WZ II and TE-80XW), you can hold your eye farther from the lens while still seeing the full field. Kowa makes no specific eyeglass-wearer claim for it.

How does the magnification of the Kowa TE-20H change between scopes?

The magnification depends on the focal length of the spotting scope body. The Kowa TE-20H provides:

    • 30x magnification when attached to a TSN-99 series scope.
    • 25x magnification when attached to a TSN-88, TSN-77, or TSN-66 series scope.

Should I choose the fixed-power Kowa TE-20H or the TE-11WZ II zoom eyepiece for birding?

If you want the longest eye relief, the TE-20H has 32mm. If you prefer to scan at low power and then zoom in to identify a bird, the TE-11WZ II zooms 30-70x on TSN-99 or 25-60x on TSN-88/66, with 17mm of eye relief.

How much eye relief does the Kowa TE-20H have?

Kowa lists 32mm of eye relief for the TE-20H, the longest of its three eyepieces for these scopes. Kowa gives no field of view figure and makes no specific eyeglass-wearer claim for it.

How do the XD lenses in the Kowa TE-20H improve the view?

Kowa says the TE-20H's XD lenses deliver crisp images and true color. Extra-low dispersion glass reduces chromatic aberration (color fringing), which is most visible on subjects against a bright background.

Can I use the Kowa TE-20H for digiscoping?

Kowa makes no specific digiscoping claim for the TE-20H. The TSN-99, TSN-88 and TSN-66 bodies have an accessory collar for Kowa digiscoping adapters, which Kowa says turns the scope into a super telephoto lens system.

How do I attach and remove the Kowa TE-20H from my TSN-88 scope?

The TSN-88 body has an eyepiece release button used to remove the eyepiece. Kowa's material gives no step by step procedure for this eyepiece, so follow your scope's instruction manual.

Why would I choose the fixed 25x power of the Kowa TE-20H over a zoom?

The main reason is its 32mm eye relief, the longest of Kowa's three eyepieces for these scopes (the TE-11WZ II zoom has 17mm). A zoom lets you change magnification; the TE-20H gives a single 25x (30x on a TSN-99).

Does the Kowa TE-20H work with the TSN-82SV spotting scope?

Kowa does not list the TE-20H for the TSN-82SV. For the TSN-82SV, Kowa lists the TE-9Z, TE-14WD and TE-17HD eyepieces.
