Can I leave a telescope outdoors year round?

Many people do, with a proper cover, capped optics and desiccant inside the tube. Check regularly for condensation, especially during spring and autumn when temperature swings are largest.

Why not just use a tarpaulin?

A tarp holds moisture against the equipment and offers no ventilation. Under it, condensation cycles daily, which is far more damaging than occasional rain would be.

Does the cover colour matter?

Yes. A dark cover in summer sun raises the temperature underneath substantially, and the larger the daily temperature swing the more condensation forms at dusk. Reflective is better.

What about snow?

Wet snow is heavy and can load a cover enough to strain the mount. Brush it off after significant accumulation rather than waiting for it to melt.
