A new telescope often arrives with one eyepiece and no filters, which leaves a considerable gap between unboxing and a good first night. Accessory kits close that gap with a coordinated set — a range of magnifications, a Barlow, a few filters and a case — usually for less than the components cost separately. What a Good Accessory Kit Contains

The value of a kit is in the spacing of what it includes — magnifications that do not overlap and filters that suit the telescope's aperture.

  • A spread of eyepiece focal lengths: Typically four or five, spaced so each is a meaningful step rather than a near-duplicate of the one beside it.
  • A Barlow lens: Doubles the useful magnifications available, which is why a kit with a good Barlow effectively contains twice as many eyepieces.
  • Colour and lunar filters: A basic Wratten selection plus a neutral density or polarizing filter for the Moon.
