Dew Heaters and Controllers

The goal of a dew heater is not warmth. It is holding the glass two or three degrees above the dew point — enough to stop condensation, little enough that you do not create tube currents that soften every image for the rest of the night. Heaters, Controllers and Power Budget

A heater system has three parts, and the controller is the one people most often skip and most often regret skipping.

  • Aperture-matched heater straps: Sized so the band covers the circumference near the objective or corrector, distributing gentle heat evenly rather than creating a hot spot.
  • Pulse-width controllers: Vary average power by switching rather than running continuously, typically cutting consumption substantially while holding the optic just above dew point.
  • Multi-channel controllers: Independent outputs for main optic, finder, guide scope and eyepiece, since each needs a different amount of power.
  • Temperature and humidity sensing: Controllers that measure ambient conditions and set output automatically, rather than requiring you to guess and adjust.
  • Cable and connector standards: RCA connectors dominate, and cable length affects voltage delivered to the strap; short runs and adequate gauge matter more than they appear to.
  • Power draw: A full set of heaters can rival the mount's own consumption, which must be accounted for in battery sizing for a full night.

Can a dew heater hurt image quality?
Yes, if run too hot. Excess heat creates convection currents inside the tube that blur detail. A controller set to hold the optic just above dew point avoids this entirely.
How many channels do I need?
One per optic that dews, which for a typical imaging rig means main scope, guide scope and sometimes the camera window — three or four channels is common.
Where should the strap sit?
Just behind the objective or corrector, on the tube rather than over the glass. Placing it too far back means the heat never reaches the surface that is actually radiating.
Will a heater drain my battery?
A regulated system uses far less than an unregulated one, but heaters remain a significant load. Budget for them separately when sizing a battery for an all-night session.
