Flat Panels
Flat frames remove vignetting, dust shadows and uneven illumination, and they are the calibration step that most visibly improves an image. Getting them right depends entirely on even illumination across the aperture, which is what a flat panel provides and what a twilight sky or a white t-shirt provides only approximately. David Astro carries flat panels in Canada, in stock, with fast shipping across Canada and worldwide.
Panel size should suit your aperture and brightness should be adjustable for narrowband work. Tell us your telescope and filters and we will specify one.

A flat frame records how your optical system illuminates the sensor. Anything uneven in the illumination source becomes an error baked into every calibrated image.
- Electroluminescent and LED panels: Uniform emitting surfaces designed for even output edge to edge, which is the property that matters most.
- Adjustable brightness: Essential for narrowband, where a panel bright enough for a luminance flat will saturate in seconds through a 3 nm filter.
- Aperture sizing: The panel must cover the full aperture including any dew shield, since illuminating only part of the aperture produces a useless flat.
- Target exposure level: Aim for roughly one third to one half of the sensor's full well, well clear of both the noise floor and the non-linear region near saturation.
- Per-filter flats: Each filter needs its own flat frame, since dust and vignetting differ between them. Automation makes this practical.
- Automated panels: Motorized covers that close and illuminate on command, allowing a remote rig to take flats without anyone present.
Why Choose David Astro for Flat Panels
A flat panel is only useful if it is even, correctly sized and dim enough for your narrowest filter.
- Sized to your full aperture: We size including the dew shield, because a panel that covers only the objective gives an incorrect illumination pattern.
- Dimming range checked for narrowband: We confirm the panel dims far enough for a 3 nm filter, which many general-purpose panels do not.
- Flat workflow advice: We help you set target exposure levels and per-filter routines so your calibration actually works the first time.
- Authorized dealer: Genuine panels with manufacturer warranty, in Canadian stock.
- Ships from Canada: No duties or brokerage fees for Canadian orders.
Flat Panels in Canada — Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I use sky flats instead?
- You can, and twilight flats work well, but the sky brightness changes quickly and gradients across the field are common. A panel is repeatable and available at any hour, which matters in winter.
- How bright should a flat be?
- Target roughly one third to one half of your sensor's full well. Too dim and read noise dominates; too bright and you enter the non-linear region near saturation.
- Do I need separate flats for each filter?
- Yes. Dust motes sit on the filters themselves and vignetting differs slightly between them, so a flat taken through luminance will not correct a narrowband frame properly.
- Does the panel need to cover the dew shield?
- It needs to cover the full aperture as the optics see it. Illuminating only part of the aperture, or letting stray light in around the edge, produces a flat that makes your images worse.
