Adapter Plates

Adapter plates solve the problem of a mounting interface that does not match — a Vixen tube on a Losmandy saddle, a camera that needs a photographic thread on an astronomy dovetail, a guide scope that needs to sit higher than its bracket allows. Adapter Plates and Interface Conversion

Each plate converts one mounting standard to another, and each one adds a mechanical joint that must not flex under load.

  • Dovetail standard converters: Plates that let a Vixen bar mount in a Losmandy saddle or the reverse, without changing the telescope's existing hardware.
  • Photographic thread adapters: Convert astronomy dovetails to 1/4-20 or 3/8-16 for cameras, ball heads and photographic accessories.
  • Riser plates: Raise a guide scope or accessory clear of a dew shield or an obstruction while keeping the connection rigid.
  • Accessory mounting plates: Add attachment points to rings or dovetails for controllers, distributors and small equipment.
  • Side-by-side and dual mounting: Plates that carry two instruments with balance adjustment, common for a main telescope plus a wide-field camera.
  • Thickness and stiffness: A thin plate under a heavy load flexes at exactly the frequency guiding cannot correct, so mass matters here.

Will an adapter plate affect my guiding?
It can if it flexes under load. Every joint you add is a potential flex point, and thin plates carrying heavy telescopes are a common cause of unexplained star elongation.
Can I put a Vixen bar on a Losmandy saddle?
With an adapter plate or a dual-fit saddle, yes. Without one the narrow bar contacts only the edges of the wide clamp, which is not a secure grip for a heavy tube.
Is a side-by-side plate a good idea?
It works well within payload limits, and balance in both axes becomes more important. Keep the two instruments as close together as possible to minimize the moment arm.
How thick should a plate be?
Thicker than looks necessary, for imaging. Deflection scales sharply with thickness, so a modest increase in mass buys a large increase in stiffness.
